Also does anyone know where in the Dublin city centre sells nikon d40?

Best places to check would be pixels on Grafton street or cameraexchange on Georges Street. You'd probably get a better deal online.

also at the moment i have a olympus 550. This is not a DSLR camera but is 7 megapixels and i know d40 is 6 megapixels. Is their much difference. I like to think i would be upgrading to a d40 then downgrading. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I havent got a lot of knowledge on cameras im a beginner.

The sensor in the D40 is probably bigger, so you get bigger pixels, less noise, better high ISO ability. I just bought the D40 as a present for someone last week. Argos were selling them for €299!!!!! They've gone up to €375 again now though unfortunately. It's still good value at €375. I had to go out of the city centre to find an Argos that had it in stock though. I got mine in Blanch.

To be honest, I was really amazed at how sharp the kit lens is. It focuses close and I'll say it again, its much sharper than I would have ever given it credit for.
My friend was shooting close ups of some woll that she spun and even on the jpegs I could zoom in and the individual fibres were sharp.

It's the same sensor that was in the D50 but alot better tech in side the camera. A friend of mine shoots with a D50 and was looking to see how large he could print one of his images. It was originally shot in jpeg format so he was a little worried. He sent the file to Repro35 to see how big they could push it and they told him they could just about get an acceptable print that was 40"x40" so I wouldn't worry about the D40 "only" being 6MP.

The D40 is super light too and easy to carry around. I was skeptical of it at first but it's a joy to use (I normally shoot with a D3 so they are worlds apart).
It's a great little camera. The only thing to remember is not every lens will autofocus on it as it doesn't have a built in motor in the body. You need to get lenses with motors built into the lenses (Nikons AF-S lenses or Sigma's HSM lenses).
