Civil Service Vs HSE Employment

    Hi,

I wonder if anyone with a good knowledge of the Public Service would know about this.

I am lucky to hold a Permanent Civil Service Position, its as a professional worker and so its possibilities of moving throughout the service are slim. Thankfully its a post that could be held throughout the recession, although I am not that happy in it I do feel very glad and greatful to have it. I worked very hard to be here. There is now a position within the HSE as a Permanent whole time position that would offer more money and provide a position most suited to my qualifications and experience, my concern is leaving the Civil Service with its Pension and Security to a new post and I wonder if the same security and benifits are afforded to HSE Staff? ( I say all of this and may not even get it)

Any advice or insight from those who might have experience in this area would be most appreciated.

    Many Thanks :)

My advice is get rid of your "grass is greener" attitude, the HSE are making cut backs the whole time, they will go last in first out, regardless of any contract you have signed. At the moment the HSE is one of the most unstable positions to hold especially in a clerical position. I lost a position i had recently in the HSE, however the Civil Service is a job which is excellent, security wise there is nothing like it. And if you aren't happy in your department you can always transfer within the sector.

My sister works for the HSE in permanent position thankfully but trying to get a job with them will be difficult at the moment.
They are letting go all temporary staff and any new employees are being taken on month by month basis even in some cases.

    Hi,

Thanks so much for getting back to me.

Firstly She devil, I wouldn't of considered myself to have a grass is greener attitude about employment. The consideration of moving is to a more suitable position suited to my professional qualifications with as it happens more money. The HSE position is full time permanent but I didn't realise that they work by a last in first out routine much like the private sector, are you sure of this?

The position I am in I am very grateful for, I do agree that its secure with the civil service but its a professional position so transfer is not an option. My position both now and if I move is at the higher end of the scale within a very particular professional arena, so I don't think it would fall into the same catgory of Clerical positions etc.

ongarite, thanks so much for sharing your insights I am glad your sister is safe, I think the role I am interested in is different, its advertised as a Whole Time Permanent Position, which is the same position I hold in the civil SErvice.

Thanks again for helping if anyone else has any direct HR experience in this regard I would welcome any advice. Basicly, I wonder if the same security/pension etc is offered to a Permanent position in the HSE compared to the Civil Service.

    Warm regards
