Dell parts - need a replacement screen

Well, I've made a stupid mistake of closing the lid on my laptop while I had left something on the keyboard and I managed to break the LCD screen. The cover isn't cracked but the picture in the lower half is gone. DAMN!

Since I need the laptop and it's working absolutely fine apart from my stupidity, I want to get it fixed. I've been ringing Dell for what seems like an eternity now, trying to get them to tell me how much a replacement screen costs.

After being through a myriad of phone lines and different queues I'm now giving up. The last person I spoke to told me they can set up a dispatch request and get someone to give me a call back. I don't understand why is it so hard to tell someone how much a replacement part costs?

I'm now looking at eBay for sourcing the screen, but I was just wondering if anyone's had similar problems before, and did anyone manage to get a contact number for Dell parts? All I can find is the US number. In Ireland they just offer sales and tech support both of which don't seem to know much about the parts that go into their laptops. One even suggested that I go into a computer store to look for a replacement panel :)

    Ebay is your best bet.

Screen prices vary A LOT though, sometimes it's more economical to replace the entire laptop (about half the time I find).

Try to get one shipped from Europe to avoid any customs expenses.

They can be a bit tricky to fit, but once you know you have the right part it usually works out fine.

Thanks for that, I bought a replacement screen off eBay and took apart the broken one. So I hope that goes well.

Still no word from Dell about that quote, I can't wait to hear how much they want for the screen :) I'm expecting a Dr.Evil "one million dollars" response!

And I was thinking, if I can't fix the screen, since I dismantled the laptop I now have the top bit off, I could just buy a new LCD monitor and use the bottom half of the laptop with it (where all the bits are anyway), it's just sitting on my desk these days anyway. I can call it a "halftop" hahah!

The last quote I got from Dell to replace a screen was €650 about 3 years ago.
They wouldn't supply the screen. It had to go back to them for an out of warranty repair.
