I was thinking of going to Frankfurt with a group of friends for the new year. Just wondering if anyone has been there recently? Is it good value for money? It prob will end up as one big drinking session, but what is there to do there? Any good site - seeing e.t.c??

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I was thinkin of headin over myself, cheap ryanair flights and what not.

I done a bit of research tho and apparently its not that great...kind of an industrial city, bit boring. Dunno tho, id love if someone replied sayin it was a good spot cos its one of the only places u can get cheap flights to for new years.

Ryaniar only fly into the airport that is like an hr outside the city I was told. €125 at the moment on Aer Lingus. They fly into the city airport.

was there earlier this year on a stag....i wouldnt bother if i were you... its a business city and only really one area sachenhausen(forgive the spelling) with nightlife..this wasnt great either to be honest and not that busy on the Friday, busy enough on the saturday....

its a good city if you like red light districts though !

There is 11 suppose to be going in total. A few girlfriends also so the red lights wont appeal to some of us!! Thanks for the replies.

If cheap flights are the key driver for the trip, I'd recommend Baden Baden and Karlsruhe.

Like Frankfurt it's a business town but has a student population too. There are some pretty good pubs around. Add to that, if girlfriends are going along, there are a couple of good spas in Baden Baden (which isn't a bad spot either).

Ryanair always have good deals there (airport code FKB) and you should easily get flights for €40 a head all in, assuming you're not going at Christmas!

Frankfurt and in particular Sachsenhausen will be mental on New Years Eve, also Hahn is 1hr and 45 mins away from Frankfurt and there is no jacks on the bus

I've been there and the place is deadly!
I was there during the 2006 World Cup and the place was rocking. I have a friend who lived there for a year as well and he said it's the best place he's been to including Oz, Canada, US, most of Europe and some of South America.

It is a business / industrial city but not during the Christmas / New Years season. There's a massive festival on over Christmas which is definitely worth checking out. Includes open-air concerts and fireworks displays over the Main river.

    Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

I worked there for a year and it's boredom on a stick. Imagine a city-sized IFSC with a river going through it and that's Frankfurt am Main.

It's a class spot, make sure to check out Cocoon, it's amazing.

The fact of the matter is most places are crap

Ppl love dublin, but lets face it...its useless, i hate it.

And although Frankfurt may be what yous have said, i've no doubt that it will liven up at the new year period...add to that the fact that 11 good friends are going together....its gonna be great :D:)

It doesnt really matter where you go, its the ppl your with. We went to prague...it was a dump, no nightlife at the time we were there, and the ppl were as rude as i've ever come accross !!!!...... but was one of the greatest holidays i was ever on :):)

I lived there for a few years and in general there is not much to recommend. But if you are just going for the new year then it will have everything you need. It has some good bars and great clubs. The Christmas markets have been extended in most cities now up to the end of the year. Romer has a great xmas market, some good bars around Hauptwache, Helium & Stereo are my faves, good nightlife in Sachsenhausen and some great clubs like King Kamehameha, Living, Cocoon (Sven Vath is resident DJ there) and U60311.

Plus fireworks are legal to buy at new years and midnight is like nothing you will ever see, worth buying some and joining the locals. They will be setting them off everywhere!
