    I currently own a Pentax Option A30.

It does the job even though I've never been THAT impressed by the photos it produces.

I'm thinking I might need something a little better but it would be need to very portable. I'm going to the Galapopgos so I want to do the scenery there justice and get some good snaps.

I don't know a whole lot about cameras. Should i look into getting a Bridge SLR or are there better Compacts out there? I've always been impressed by Canon Ixuses.

    thanks in advance.

That Pentax seems to have quite a good review. Another Compact in the price range you are looking at would only be marginally different.

Why were you not impressed with the photo's from the Pentax?

I assume that when you say that you don't know a lot about cameras that you will want to stay with that Auto Settings? If that is the case then I would stick with the Pentax. If you wanted to learn a bit more about Photography before you go then maybe a different camera could be of benefit.

Yeah i guess I was just trying to get an idea of whether jumping to something like this:

Would it be worth the extra bulk or is there such thing as a 'premium' compact?

The quqlity of that would be better than the compact you have. It is also quite a lot more than the €250 budget you mentioned earlier.

Can I ask again, why were you not impressed with the photo's from the Pentax? This is to try and work out if it's the camera or how you are using it.

What do you expect from a Camera?

As for a Premium Compact then the Canon G9 or G10 would take that ticket I think.

I'm not sure. I just compared photos with a friend with an Ixus and it seemed like i needed to do a bit more post-processing to get comparable quality. Then again, I'm no expert so I'll do a bit more research and figure out if an upgrade is worth it.

If you go for the W line of Pentaxes, you would get waterproof versions of the same cameras. Handy for all around travel.
