....of the Dublin marathon participants here not yet back training?

I took 10 days off after the marathon, and have run a total of 10 miles since then (2 x easy 3 milers, plus the BHAA 6k race). Hope to maybe do 20 miles this week, but not that bothered if I don't!

Am surprised by the sessions some of you are putting in. Are you not feeling the post-marathon strains?

I had been but the beach race seemed to sort me out, I finally feel back on form and really enjoyed yesterdays 8x400. Maybe start a new running book or something for motivation, I think abhainn suggested this earlier, I've started on Lore of running,

I'm not back training, but that's injury related rather than laziness.

I'm back (kind of) but thats unusual and down to a number of factors. I cruised the last three miles rather than really putting the hammer down and so the stresses and strains were a little lighter than normal. Normally I take almost a full month off, this time I was running again within a fortnight.

But like you I'm "take or leaving it" - if its dry and I feel like it I run. If not I don't. That'll change when I start my plan in Dec but for now it's just fun running again

    went back the weekend after.
    keeping it at 25-30 miles/week.

going to start a plan for connemara in the next couple of weeks.

If anyone can recommend some good hills in the dublin mountains, please do (am familiar with hell fire & cruagh).

Am reading two running books at the moment! One is the story of the 2007 NYC marathon told from the angle of both professionals and mass participants (enjoyable read, although includes a lot about Ryan Shay in Olympic qualifiers which is not nice reading). The other is "What I talk about when I talk about running" - a great read (recommended here previously)

I don't think it's a motivation issue (although it's fairly easy staying indoors these evenings!). I think it's more of a concern about injury after what felt like a long training cycle for this year's marathon, plus a pretty tough race. Picked up a bit of a strain in the BHAA race - am taking that as a warning sign to ease off the heavy work.

    Just back today.
When first went outside and all kitted up , turned around and went straight back in! Had to put on a second layer.
Off I go at second attempt and the heavens opened for the first mile. An omen?
    Anyway 6 miles in 44:30.
Legs felt fresh, but heart was pumping way more than I would have thought after only 2 weeks off.

Having had a virus in the weeks before Dublin, I was over-rested come the race itself, and was quite fresh at the finish. Although happy with my run, I know I can go faster, and am looking forward to training for a spring marathon.
Also, one of my goals for 2008 is a sub40 10k, so I want to sharpen up a bit for that.

I was surprised how quickly the aches and pains go actually.

Im back running since the Friday after the marathon but very light stuff...two miles, three miles, 6 on a Sunday.

I feel 100% now but I think thats deceptive and I am very aware I am still in recovery mode so will take it easy for a while longer.

but fvck it, my view is you just ran a marathon in three hours....take as long off as you like, you deserve it:P

I think you are right not too rush back. I usually take a month off after a marathon. I still cover maybe 20-25 slow miles a week but do no sessions at all. Don't rush back I find it eventually catches up on you.

I took a full week off, jogged 15 miles last week and started back properly today. I've never felt so unfit in all my life :(.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,863 ✭✭✭hawkwing

Took 7 days off and since did 1*2m,3*3.6m and 1*5.26m since. enjoying going a bit faster and not doing 30-40/week:) Roll on the aware run!

Haven't run since and I'm off to the States for two weeks tomorrow so it will be a while before I do again. Enjoying the break, I'd been fairly hard at it for the past year.

Interestingly, i took about a week off after the marathon and then went back to doing in and around 30 miles per week. While I've felt pretty good since I've restarted running, I played in a 5-a-side tournament on Saturday morning and it wiped me out! I'm still not fully recharged, went for a eight miler last night and the legs felt awfully heavy!

I took about ten days off, even though the legs felt fine after 3 days. Did 3x5 mile last week, and was ok also. Interesting was, I also went to the gym and did a session on the rowing machine. I found that quite hard on the hips (strangely). Was glad I did it though, as it reminded me, I'm nowhere near recovered fully.

Din't do anything the first week off a part from a swim in the pool and on one of the bikes (had intended going out on an actual bike but realised i had a puncture less than a mile in with the tyre totally worn so that put paid to that!)

2nd week was in budapest and went out for two 40 minute runs in around the peoples park. If any of you are ever there try and go for a run in elizabeth island , they have a tartan track lane the whole way around the island , roughly just over a 5 k loop, some facilities

Wen out on actual road trying out new orthotics last sunday. Old knee problem still playing up so i will be cycling and swimming for the next couple of weeks until thats resolved.

Id imagine you wouldn't lose a huge amount of fitness in a couple of weeks off eh ?

Anyone recommend a good fast spring/ early summer marathon, intending doing connemara (its in my back yard !) but that is for the experience of doing it rather than a pb

I went for two runs last week and i was still tight in the legs but i am fully back training this week but i am taking it handy going to do a "long run" on Saturday, a nice 7 miler.

Did the Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes on Sunday between Nice and Cannes, (great marathon, review to follow) and to be honest I can't wait to get back running. Played a small bit of doubles badminton on Monday night (took things fairly easy) and singles tennis yesterday, was definitely a bit wrecked on the tennis court.

While I want to get back running, I'll have to wait and see til this afternoon, as I may have what is known as a Marcher's Fracture in my left foot, going for an x-ray today to find out for sure. Was in severe pain between 17km and 19km, but gritted the teeth and beared it and it went away, came back at around 38km but at that stage so many other parts of my body were complaining it didn't hog all of my attention. Hopefully I'll get the all clear today as I've signed up for another marathon in two-and-a-half week's time.

I've heard great things about it, it's next on my To Read list for sure.

oh thank god im not the only one!

ive done a little bit, 2 easy runs of just under 10k.

i suppose part of me knows once i get back into it i'll start training hard for connemara and is trying to put that off. the joy of finishing my first marathon seems distant but when i run the pain of training for it seems so close.

gonna go for a swim tonight.

Haven't done much. One proper run last weekend and keep saying as I'm leaving work that "I'll definately go out tonight" even though I'm meant to be doing the Award 10k I haven't been able to drag myself out much. Have been doing a good bit of gym work too though but that hasn't really contained much running.

No, I haven't started back yet either. I've been going to the gym and swimming but have a slight injury so have consciously decided to take an extra week off. I intend to get out on Saturday for a 6-7mile run.

Dublin was my 4th marathon this year. I was back doing a short run within 2 days and I'm ticking away nicely without any problem for the Aware 10K. Running is my stress reliever. I find that I'm not a good rester. For most of the marathons I've done its suited me to get back running as soon as possible after. I've read stuff like you shouldn't run for a month after etc. I've also seen stuff about the 'run every day' ones who run at least a mile a day even if they've run a marathon the previous day. Each to their own I suppose.
