Keeping Your Handicap While Moving Club?

This doesn't deserve a thread but I didn't want to hijack the other posters certificate thread...

    Scenario:
You join a club on a temporary basis such as a winter deal, basically a 4/5 month option which will expire, obtain a handicap but don't join the club permanently, OR, you leave your club and are not a member anywhere.

The question is - is your handicap valid when you are without a club? If you have correctly obtained it and registered it with GUI (Is that right?) do you then move to a new club with that or is your handicap non transferable? Is there an expiry date if you are playing an open or society function?

The system has changed since I knew it, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

    Cheers

Your handicap is only valid as long as you are a member of a gui-affiliated club.

If you join a new club, you just need a letter of handicap transfer for your new club. You will not be able to get a handicap in the new club unless you transfer the previous handicap.
It is actually quiet a good system.

If your membership lapses though and you join a new club within (i think) a year your handicap can be transferred. Otherwise you need to go down the three cards route...

The transfer should be easier now, as everyones handicap history is on the GUI site.

Yes can you not just quote your GUI number.......why would you need a letter from your old club?

But you don't take your number with you... it would change when you moved. All numbers are club specific.

Thanks Graeme I didn't realise that. If you move clubs then can you give them the old number and they can transfer the details to the new club?????

Thanks Lads, I'm hoping the 'year long validity' part is right.....

    Cheers
