Gaggia stalling

    Hi,

I have a Gaggia Carezza, when dispensing water via the basket when the water isnt under pressure it can pump hot water until the water tank is empty.

As soon as you introduce ground coffee, especially finely ground the pump stalls after dispensing a certain amount of water. I presume this isnt correct ? and the water should pump until I switch it off ? Any clues on what could be going wrong ?

    Thanks

How fine is the grind you are using? Any chance your grind is too fine?

6 on an MDF, but it will also stall on higher - say 12 - 15.

There are a few people on here using that grinder at the moment who can advise on what setting they use. Even allowing for grinder and bean variation it should help indicate whether it's the grind or the espresso machine. Might be worth contacting Kenilworth electrical if out of warranty to see if it's the pump.

It's unlikely to be the grinder setting if it is stalling the machine at setting 12 as well as 6, unless the grinder is faulty. That is very unlikely though given the way an MDF works. It's not possible to divorce the turning of the hopper from the distance between the burrs.

Besides the possibility of a pump problem, it could be a faulty over pressure relief valve in the espresso machine. This is a complete guess, but it could be opening early causing the pressure to return to the tank rather than through the brew group.

I've looked at this machine and I'm somewhat mystified as to why this happens. The machine has been taken apart and thoroughly cleaned so it's not likely to be a blockage.

There is no OPV on this machine to divert water back to the tank. The funny thing is that when it stalls it's only for a bit and then it comes back to life and the pressure starts to climb again.

Could it be anything to do with the shower screen? Maybe tightening the grouphead to far is trapping something in the screen? Have you screwed it off to take a look?

Forgot to say that this behaviour is also apparent when a pressure gauge is on the machine and therefore has nothing to do with the coffee I reckon.
