I'm hoping to get an i-pod for my dad for his birthday but dont know which one to get.
Im tied between the new ipod nano or the touch. Baring in mind that he's not amazing with technology, which would be better to go with.
Also is the 8gb memorie on the ipod touch too small??
    Any opinions apreciated!!!!

Besides the money factor, what would your dad use it for - music or the lot (photos, films etc). If its just music - like my dad would be looking for, then the nano would be perfect. :)

The money doesn't matter so much I'm willing to pay the money for the better one(it's one of the big birthdays!!!:D)
In general, its mostly music he'd use it for, but i think he would use the internet on the touch.

I'd defintely vouch for the iPod Touch as it's interface is so much more intuitive than even the regular iPods.
For someone not particularly tech-proficient being able to just touch what you want to do is a huge advantage.

If you do go for a Touch, be sure it's a 2nd Generation version you get - it's got volume controls on the unit itself, a speaker and a bunch more features.
The problem is many retailers still have alot of legacy 1st Generation stock lying around and they'll try to pass that off if they get a chance.

I have the ipod touch and with wireless internet at home / elsewhere I can watch youtube etc at my leisure and its really appealing :)

Main question: would he prefer a small mp3 (ipod touch is clumsy by comparison with the nano)

I think 'clumsy' is a far too harsh word, even when comparing them. The iPod Touch is small and light in absoulte terms, and the Nanos have always had a 'If I put this in my pocket with anything else it'll be crushed' aura about them.

Is the internet on the ipod touch relatively fast and reliable?
Can you watch streaming tv shows on it or just shorter youtube videos?

the ipod touch was 802.11g which is good up to 54mbps speed. so unless your internet connection is bigger than that - which let's face it, in ireland there's no hope in hell it is - then you'll get the same browsing speed as you do on other wireless devices i.e. a laptop.
