Triathlon/running advise

    hi,

i got a racing bike about 8 months ago and have been cycling regularly up the wicklow/dublin mountains since, and about a month ago i joined a triathlon team after i decided to learn to swim properly. my cycling is fine and my swimming is coming along, but my main concern is my running. im at an ok level of fitness from my cycling training but by next june i hope to see this skyrocket. plan on completing a good few tri's over the summer as ill be on holidays from college, enough to get a national ranking, even if i finish near the bottom, but plan on keeping my training going strong so hopefully that wont happen

having not ran in a few years i decided to go for a run today to guage where i was at running wise. i did a bit over 5 miles in a bit under 50 mins. the first 2 miles were steadily uphill, 300ft steady climb, the rest was very flat.

i have signed myself up to do the connamara half marathon in march as a motivator to get myself running properly. can anybody advise me as to what kind of training i should do for this half marathon? im thinking about following hal higdons half marathon plan, i seen his site gets a lot of good press on this forum.

also, if there is anyone here who competes in tri's could they tell me what minute mile thay would expect to be running in an olmypic tri? and same again for a sprint tri, assuming this would be faster?

finally, do people train for tri's by doing their own makeshift duathlons. i was thinking of doing that, i.e. cycling out somewhere from my house and back, and then immediatly go for a run. is this a done thing in tri training?

    cheers

Alot of people heading up to this event!

Pacing all depends on the person. Some will be running 10 minute miles off the bike, some 5 minute miles. Most come in around 45-55 minutes for a 10km off the bike. Most come in for 22-30 for a 5km off the bike. In Ireland the "fast lads" (campbell et al) will be running 31 minutes off the bike. To place top 20 you'd want to be running

Don't worry, nobody comments or slags people running slowly in triathlon. Its very inclusive.

Its done alright and its called brick training, it really isn't necessary until 2 months or so before your event. Then it should be something like a hard fast session on a stationary trainer followed by a short fast run with repeats.
