Stupid question on engagement ring SIZE!

    Hi,

I am about to buy an engagement ring here: http://www.bluenile.co.uk/

Now I went through the process and chose the diamond and the band, etc ,etc....but I have no idea what the "size" of the ring should be

There are letters to chose (based on the size)....my girlfriend as a "normal" girly hand, meaning quite thin as probably 80% of the girls out there if you know what I mean - what does this correspond to in terms of ring size?

Your help is very much appreciated! I plan to order the ring today or tomorrow.

By the way did any of you buy from this website? It looks good but I would like to know if somebody had experience in purchasing from those guys...

    Thank you so much :)

I would advise you to get a ring that you know fits her finger (from her jewellery box), and bring it down to a jewellers and they will size it for you. Everybodies hand is different, so there is no way of guessing. Now bare in mind the ring you get from her jewellery box, she would most likely wear on her right hand, and normally one of your hands is slightly bigger than the other. But there would only be a slight difference, so if it is too big or too small, it would only be quite slight, and any jewellers should be able to fix that for you. But definitely do not try to guess a size.

    Hope this helps;)

You'll need to find out what her ring size is. There's no way anyone here could guess - it would be like asking us what her shoe size is :)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_size

See if you can come up with some way of finding out, perhaps a friend or a parent knows. Some tips here:
    http://www.bluenile.co.uk/ring_findsize_measure.jsp?mod=findringsize

I particularly like the candle idea - remember though that each finger varies in size, so you'll need to get a ring that she would ordinarily wear on the ring finger.

If all else fails, it should be possible to resize the ring because it's just a plain band.

My goodness! They never make things easy for us! I am learning so much here :D

Thank you for your advice, I will try to take a ring from her without getting caught! :)

I just emailed BlueNile and there is a 30 day return policy, so I feel a bit better...if I get the wrong size I can just return it and they will change it for me :)

I feel a bit relieved! I would have been a nightmare to have to go around and find a new "wife" whose finger can fit properly in the ring! :D

OK, this is getting a bit ridiculous what I will post it anyway.

I don't want to tell any of her friends that I am about to propose and don't want to make my girlfriend suspicious, so I just did the "piece of string of paper" on my finger and it came out 47.5mm...so that would be about an "I" size in the scale, I figured my girlfriend's fingers are slightly smaller than mines, so I think size "H" should do....there is only 1 smaller size in the list (G) and I was temped to go for that one, but I figured that must be for super-small....also I'd prefer slightly bigger (at least it can fit her when I propose! :D ).

A bit of a gamble, but I can change it afterwards in case.....

    Am I crazy?

    Ring Size* Measured Size
    (UK) (mm)

    G 45.5

    H 46.7

    I 48

    J 48.7

    K 49.9

And so on until Z 68.4

    You're probably a little bit insane :)

Someone else with experience might be able to tell you, but afaik it's easier to make a band bigger than to make it smaller. With that in mind, you'd be safer going with a smaller band, but again don't take my word on it. :)

Again, if you can, get a hold of one of her rings, assuming she wears one. Then you can try the candle trick, or even try it on your own little finger and see if it fits :)

    sounds crazy to me! ;)

i would be amazingly small for a man, so i don't think you did it right.

if she's a normal enough girl's finger, go for m. if she's a smaller finger, go for j. if she has a really small finger, go for h.

it's about the same difficulty to size up as it is down, though it might not be possible at all depending on the ring. bear that in mind when you select a style.

try to steal a ring from her jewellery box, otherwise you'll be miles off. even with a ring it's hard, you really need the hand to take a measurement. try to steal a narrow ring, not a big chunky one.

Yes I did some research on the web and I think I did something wrong. I will go for J size! I think I am about 50% confident that this will fit :)

Here's a weird idea for ya to try.

When she's asleep put a bit of string around her finger and measure it from there, if between sizes go a size higher, most people will swell slightly after flying and stuff, there's be nothing worse than her having to get her ring cut off her hand off a long flight or something, trust me, she won't be happy if she can't wear the ring that you bought her WHEN she says yes

Gives average small, medium, and large sizes. Average small is L so i'd say J is very small.

I'm in the same boat, and have asked her sister to find out for me.

Trying to decide between buying at blue nile, cool diamonds or phillipe harold. Not sure who to go with. Will let price : quality decide.

I'm telling ye lads, wait till she's asleep, little piece of thread around the finger and mark with a pen, there you go with the measurment, if she wakes up, just pretend nothing.

Hi JBL - I can recommend two places for you to have a look at before you buy - www.topazery.com and www.dialadiamond.com. Both are in America and both are exceptional value for money. I've bought from both and the diamonds would take your eye out!! The name for the second place is a bit tacky, it's actually a jewellers located in the Empire State Building and has nothing but the best. Also, both websites specialise in estate jewellery, which is incredible and you're guaranteed one of a kind.

As for the sizing, not sure what the best thing to do is. Could you get a hold of any of her other ring/s and draw the inner and outer circumference on a piece of paper? I'm sure you could use this to get the sizing you need.

Either way, with all the effort you're putting in, I'm sure she'll be delighted. Good luck.

Was thinking to try that, but I am sure she would catch me! :o

Not easy to pull out the finger without waking her up IMO....unless I find some drugs that can make her sleep tight all night....any recommendation? :D

Drugging the girl you want to marry, that's a good start (I'll PM ya ;), only joking mods)

She won't wake, just loop the thread around loosely and mark it off, no worries

I'm in the same situation... My GF usually leaves her rings lying about the place but lately she's been keeping them on. Found one last night.. Need to get a callipers n get a propper measurement off it... As for the string around the finger, my GF would sleep through an earthquake...

I just would like to thank everybody here and give a quick update. I got the the ring, ordered a size K in the end, it was gorgeous (so nice that I was considering keeping it for myself :D )!!!

I proposed and she said yes (of course, how can a woman refuse a hot man as I am  ).....and loved the ring. And guess what? It fit perfectly! She has been wearing it for a week now and the size is perfect :)

So my advice to you guys trying to figure out the correct size of the ring is: GAMBLE IT!!! ;)

    Thank you again guys!

    JBL,

Congrats!! I got engaged last month and also bought off bluenile, like you i had trouble getting her sze etc, but it all worked out in the end. Found bluenile excellent, and the ring is great, would highly recommend the site. Proved to be great value for money too, got the ring valued for insurance purposes, and the value came in at almost twice what i paid for it!

Good luck with organising the wedding etc!

I'd be careful about ordering from BlueNile, my fiancee's friend ordered one from there and they had to pay import duty on the diamond ring. If you could somehow get them to disguise who the package is from (i.e don't put BlueNile all over it) then you might get away with it.

I got engaged recently and myself and the girlfriend went to Antwerp to buy the ring. We got a great deal, the valuation of the ring back in Dublin was 3 times what we paid for it.

I guess your situation is different as you want the ring with you when you propose so maybe Antwerp is not the answer.

    Anyhoo, good luck!!

    Congrats!

You missed out though by not checking Blue Nile properly. Blue Nile are based in Dublin and ship from there and www.bluenile.co.uk is priced in sterling. With GIA certs and laser-inscribed diamonds to ensure you're getting the diamond that matches the cert, there is nothing in the market to compare to Blue Nile.

And Blue Nile wouldn't ever be all over the package. Its very discreet using DHL packaging. No one knows what's in the package. How long ago since your friend used Blue Nile USA? maybe because it came from outside EU that they had to state exactly what was in the pack. But inside the EU, its 100% discreet. It would have to be, for couples living together etc.

I used Blue Nile. I researched many avenues. Over many years!! I honestly don't think Antwerp compares (certs usually not GIA, which is the highest grading scheme). Of course, antwerp is romantic. But Blue Nile is a live diamond market. Its as good as pricing gets. For topnotch rock.

    My 2 cents.
