During the course of this series the commentators said that, Indians felt that the aussie india test series has overtaken the askes in importance and competitveness.

    yay or nay?

It all depends where you're from and what you were raised with. Naturally Indians are going to feel that matches involving their team and the world's best team are the most important.

I'm never that interested in matches between Australia & New Zealand, but Aussie & Kiwi mates of mine practically foam at the mouth over how important they are.

loved every minute of the past two series between india and australia, obviously 2005 stands out regards the ashes series but the followup in 2007 or even the series prior to 05 were not that good.

currently prefer the gavaskar/border cup as the indians are more capable of matching the aussies on a consistant basis.

interesting times ahead for the indians with quite a few of the older heads making way (or should be).

future is bright especially if the likes of rohit sharma can take his ODI form into the test arena.

dravid needs to join kumble and ganguly.

well the ICC obviously regard the ashes in higher esteem. According to them the England South Africa series is a higher priority also (from now on). Both have the status of a 'Legends Series', ie, a 5 test series. This was recently granted to England SA test series.

Border/Gavaskar is only a four match affair.

Id have to side with the Ashes also, mainly for the reasons outlined by truedub. As the closest test team to Ireland by a distance, England have my full support.

im from ireland but my parents are indian...i absolutely love the ashes test series but recently the competiveness and attidude that india have brought to the field specifically against australia has made it for a more entertaining series.

In saying that i hope that pietersen brings a similar attidude to the england team for the ashes...if so it will be an unbelivable series.

Going by competitiveness id side with the India / Oz series, but as you are all saying, id pay preference to the Ashes due to the fact England are closest to us, and perhaps the team we hold the most knowledge of

If you asked every member of the Aussie squad if theyd sooner beat England or India, I doubt any of them would say India! The G/B Cup is a great series, and in truth is probably always going to be more likely to produce more competitive cricket, but the Ashes is special, and winning the Ashes means more to Australia than anything else.

As an Aussie if I think who would I hate to lose to most? Definitely England.

Who do I enjoy beating the most? India (these days anyway).

I think it's the Ashes for me, particularly because of the history / rivalry.

Aye and the fact that people go to the Ashes matches as well helps! ;)

My view would that historically, the Ashes holds the biggest draw, and I feel this is down to TV. You can watch almost every ball of every international match of importance on TV nowadays.

Its only in the last 10 years or so that India has got its act together regarding the televising of their matches, allowing the ability to watch any game from there, whereas we over here have been able to watch The Ashes and all of Englands home matches continously live since the 1950's, and overseas as highlights since the 1970's and live since 1990.

And with that, comes the hype.
