    Hi there,
Im not sure what section of boards to post this under so maybe it needs to be moved but I want to know if anyone has any info on working on a cruise ship? Im unemployed atm and my dream is to travel the world so I just got to thinking recently that I could work on a cruise ship and travel the world at the same time. I have no experience in this area so have any of you ever done this before or know of anyone who has? Is it hard ot get a job on a cruise ship? Best way of going about doing it?
    Cheers!

Oh, cruise ships. I was on one for six months, so thought I'd share.

You didn't mention what kind of work you'd want to be doing on the ship, but in my experience, your lifestyle while on the ship varies greatly depending on your position. I was a dancer, and we had a lot of freedom. So did the singers, the people who worked in the casinos, the women who worked in the spa . . . basically most of us who were in contact with the guests could roam freely during our time off (provided we wore our name tags, of course!). We were allowed to disembark at the ports and participate in the shore excursions with the guests. It is, in my opinion, a great way to save money, seeing as how you're not paying for food, room & board, utilities, etc. As far as seeing the world, the excursions are great, but I would suggest that if you have a choice, you should pick your run carefully; a lot of the ports are purely tourist destinations and the ship is docked for only a few hours.

On the other hand, there are a lot of positions on the ship that were more restricted. Their rooms were below the water level, they couldn't ever go up to the guest areas, and they always had to eat in the crew area. They could definitely leave the ship when we were in port, but I can't ever remember seeing any of them on a shore excursion (and I did a lot!).

For performance positions, auditions are held usually in the first part of the year. For other positions, I'd advise going onto websites of particular companies and seeing what you can find there. I only worked for one company, but I know a lot of people who have performed on various ships and, as you might expect, the experience (privileges, duties, pay, etc.) varies greatly depending on the company.

Some people renew their contracts continuously -- I even know of several people who met their OHs on board and remained working together on one ship or another for years! I couldn't hack it, but I think with different coworkers and a different run, things might have been different. Everything matters when you spend a LOT of your time on a massive boat seeing the same people and surroundings. Anyway, I don't know if this helps at all, but start researching cruise companies that do around the world trips and go from there. You can always try it for a while and fly back if it doesn't work out!

Cheers for the reply. Interesting read. I have a good few questions as I have no experience in this area - the idea just popped into my head lately!

At the minute I have no idea what work I would do or even if Im qualified for any of the work they need. My previous employment involves working in Dunnes Stores and a test laboratory (factory). I have experience with casinos also and dealing card games if that would be useful. I just really like the idea of working while travelling the world. Was it hard for you to get a job on a cruise ship? How did you go about doing it? Were there many people working there who werent too experienced in their position?

What company did you work for? Could you recommend a good one?
