I am ready to paint my fairly small sitting room but don't know what colour. I wanted a brown and wine/plum colour scheme but went and bought a black sofa. Now have brown chairs, black sofa and wine/plum colored rug. Fireplace surround is black, curtains are gold and have blonde (not pine or beech) coloured wooden floors. too much going on! help!!

In my opinion you need to paint the walls a very neutral cream or stone colour. If there's a chimney breast you could paint it a plum colour as a feature, otherwise just buy a load of plum/gold cushions for the sofa and co-ordinating artwork.
Any chance of getting the brown chairs covered in plum or black? You can't really keep with the brown theme now you have a black sofa, but black/gold/plum would be lovely.
