Mac newbie can't open WMV files

    Hi all,

I'm trying to listen to these files (http://www.todayfm.com/Article.asp?id=448129) which I believe are WMV files but they won't open for me. So I tried downloading something called Flip4Mac which is supposed to open WMV files in Quicktime but no good. Tried downloading Windows Media Player for Mac but got this message: Unable to expand "Windows Media 3. sitx" - Stuffit archives are not supported. Anyone know where I'm going wrong here, or have any suggestions as to what to try next?

Download VLC media player. It will play pretty much anything.

I tried opening the files (on Firefox, as opposed to downloading them) and got "The page cannot be found", so it could just be the link is broken. I have Flip4Mac and it seems to handle just about all WMV files.

Just further to this, Windows Media Player for Mac has been dead a long time, which I guess is why it's still being distributed as a .sitx file. These are rare these days, and to open them you need an app called Stuffit Expander. I highly suggest you don't install it, it caused me nothing but hassle a few years back and isn't really necessary anymore.

WMV files should play fine once Flip4Mac is installed unless they're protected WMV (in which case they won't play on a Mac, period), or there's something wrong with the file (which is more likely in the case of a podcast).

EDIT: Just tried the first link now and it worked fine, so I'm assuming there was some server problem when you tried earlier. Maybe try again and let us know how you get on.

What's wrong with Stuffit Expander? I use it regularly without problems.

No, I was talking about Stuffit alright. I don't like apps that can't be uninstalled...
