Vehicle Laws

I was hoping someone could inform me of legislation regarding the height of vehicles using the public highway, and the operator's knowledge thereof. I know there is legislation in the UK stating that a driver of a vehicle must be aware of the specifications of his vehicle, and is under a duty to utilise his vehicle accordingly. I'm unsure of whether or not there is corresponding legislation here.

    Thanks.

AFAIK we have no height limits here, they where thinking of bringing them in when the port tunnel opened to remove the supercube trailers that An Post ( and a few others) used but I don't think they have yet.

It's always the drivers responsibilty to ensure they know the height, width and any over hangs on the vehicle they are driving, not just HGV's. Not sure where the law is, but the driver of any vehicle is responsible for it and any loads carried on or in it. If the vehicle is over height then they have to check if it'll fit under bridges etc before leaving. But given the number of bridge strikes we get I don't think anyone knows this.

There is a specific offence of striking a bridge, I think in the Railway Safety Act, 2005(?).

Abnormal (over-sized or over-weight) loads need a council licence, so the legislation that backs that up probably has some effect. Possibly Road Traffic Acts 1932/1933.

Up to the opening of the Dublin Port Tunnel, there was no maximum height. It was claimed that a general one was brought in, but I haven't seen the SI.

    Port Tunnel http://www.dublincity.ie/RoadsandTraffic/HGV/Documents/bye_laws_tcm35-48146%20(2).pdf

Road Traffic (Construction and use of Vehicles Regulations 2003). http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2003/en/si/0005.html "36 The maximum overall height of a double deck large public service vehicle shall not exceed 4.57 metres."
