Before buying a camera, I would suggest if you could think a little what would you like to do with your camera, what type of photography (family, travelling, learning photography...).
There is a lot of information in out Read first - FAQ sticky.

There was a real good deal on a nikon dslr within your budget in Argos. There's a recent thread (last week) on it. On my phone at the moment so can't search but should be easy found. That would get you into exchangable lens territory and you can build a stock of gear thereafter.

    I just got myself a Canon G9 with an extra 2 batteries & 2 x 4GB Cards for €400.

Only had it a few days but really impressed so far. It has compromises, but it's a powerful piece of kit & great when you don't want to have a DSLR. I think that it would be a fantastic camera to learn with & then also useful as a small camera after getting a DSLR later. It has all the manual control, apart from real manual focus.

I asked the same question off my mates (one is a semi-pro photographer) about 18 months ago. My previous camera had been Casio,Fujifilm then Casio Exilim. I wanted a camera with better than x3 optical zoom and better than 6MP,as well as several preprogrammed shooting modes. I take photos of landscapes, photos of aircraft, and then the usual family shots. I prefered the interface of the Casio.

After much discussion I purchased a Canon S5 IS last August. I love it. It offers me increased capability without the extra learning of having a SLR (which all my mates use) I have found my photos come out better, the extra zoom and MP lets me take better shots of aircraft, and it is still small enough to keep in my work briefcase or carry. My mates recommended it as a camera than will help me grow without swamping me.

Perhaps going for a camera similar to this would be easier for you than going straight to an SLR? In the FAQ linked above my camera is classed as EDSLR,was explained to me as a 'bridge' between compact ad SLR.

I'll tell ye, one of my friends picked up a Nikon D60 during the week - She got it in Amsterdam Airport for €500, but that was including a bag, extra cards and a few other bits and bobs, I think the camera and lens was about €379 - Realy impressive build quality, image quality, and an all round good camera for anyone getting into it. Tbh, I reckon if you got one, you wouldn't need to look at upgrading for quite a while!

I'm not sure what kind of deals you'll find around Dublin, but if you can find something around that price, you're laughing!

The D60 works out about €370 from dixons tax free, I don't know how much it would cost the OP to get a flight to Belfast or Manchester and back but that's great value.

Even if that's too dear she could get an E420 for €315 which is fantastic value.
