Sounds good in principle. May not work out in real life. But I'd like to prove myself wrong.

There was a psychological analysis of the extremists in Muslim countries, the suicide bomber types were polygamy is allowed.

They were low caste/low paid males, and the women preferred sharing a rich man than settling for a poorer one.
So they were easily recruited and their frustration and hate were used to turn them into suicide bombers. Not sure if that urban myth about them being promised 40 virgins in the afterlife was true or not.

The point is, there's a natural balance of men and women.
It's wouldn't end well for either side if that was upset.

Just to clarify - polygamy means more than one wife and polyandry means more than one husband.

There are places that polyandry is the norm, such as parts of Nepal. Polygamy is more common for a few reasons:
    -symptom of a patriarchy
-men were more likely to go off and get themselves killed in war so the ratio of men to women was low

Hmm...they're saying that due to female foeticide in places like CHina and India, there are now way too many men for all the women...sounds ripe for a revival of polyandrism..??

Actually polygyny is the many wives version. While there are well known problems associated with a polygynous society, disenfranchised younger males and so on, a polyandrous one actually makes great economic and social sense. Score one for the ladies there!

isnt the natural balance letting people do what they want - i.e what nature wants

    huh

some time ago there was a thread with a hypothetical question " what would you do if you caught your girlfriend cheating"

the majority of answers was: kill, neuter, never speak to her again

i wonder how many people who gave answers like that, voted pro polygamy - a form of legalised cheating - in the poll

look at what happens to the unwanted sons of the Mormons

if you have a male gene that uses violence to get wives/assets to get wives then that gene perpetuates , it would be come a winner takes all siutation , too many tribes like that out there

Yeah sure why not? Monogamy is overrated anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,856 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

I don't see why not... Most people would still probably only want a monogamous marraige, so if a minority of people want to have a polgamous one then in principle there's no reason why they shouldn't as long as it's all consensual, etc. Legally and practically I dunno if there would be problems, but in principle sure.

Not really, given the obvious rivalry between men, and the question of who is the father of each child, and all the unmarried women

And rivalry among women does not exist?

Who cares who the father is? Anyway, you can always do a DNA test if you care that much.

    Unmarried women...*shivers in dread*

Aha but why would they be getting married if they weren't in some sort of harmony in the first place? Multiple fathers would also provide a great deal more financial security for the family unit - the question of fatherhood wouldn't come into it since they would all share responsiblity equally. It would lead to the unique situation of a fair few unmarried young women wandering about though, thus leading unmarried men to partner with them, so basically it would even out in the end.

I dunno, anyone that wants to live with several partners can do so anyway, its not illegal. The only thing under discussion is the legalisation of marraige between more than two partners, which really comes down to the tax implications and a few more loose ends; not much of a big deal imho.

I was sitting down one day, having a chat with an Iraqi family, and the matriarch asked me if I had any wives. Keeping it simple (not going into my dating scene), I just said "yes." She asked if I wanted an Iraqi one as well. I said I couldn't. She asked why, I explained that if I went home with an Iraqi wife, my American one would leave me and I would be put into jail.

She looked at me aghast and horrified that a country so great as the US could possibly deny a man a second wife.

    NTM

Every man? If our ancestor men hadn't cared, then they wouldn't be ancestors. The only polyandry that really exists is fraternal i.e. several brothers marrying one woman, so the children are - at least - nieces/nephews.

I'd want two wives, one to clean and one to look after the kids, no husbands though, have my hands full with the one i have ;)
