Does anyone know if it is truely possible to play VC1 encoded 1080p video in osx?

I have one movie that is taken from a blu-ray disc and I'd like to watch it on my mac (2.16GHz Core2Duo MBP).

But it wont play smoothly. Quicktime plays it at around 14fps which is far too jerky. VLC will play the video ok but there is no sound because it doesn't yet support the audio codec embedded in VC1 files (I believe VC1 is also known as WMV9?).

Is there any software out there capable of playing these videos in osx?

For now I have to boot into windows to play it. :(

I'm not sure about the VC-1 format to be honest, but give Plex a go. It's more of a full-on Front Row replacement and I use it for all my media needs:

What's cool about Plex is that you can set up a buffer amount for different types of video playback and that allows files that would otherwise "choke" to playback fine. I use it for playing 1080p .mkv files over WiFi, which is a disaster with QuickTime and glitches quite a lot in VLC. With Plex, those files play without a single dropped frame.

I tried Plex last night with no joy. Video but no audio. After some more research there it seems that the VC-1 audio is not yet supported by FFmpeg or vlc, it might never be either.

Looks like it's windows only for the forseeable future.

Damn. Don't know of any other options then - are VC1 files direct rips of the files on a Bluray disc then? It's probably the lack of official Bluray support on OS X then that's the problem and I imagine not a lot of people are actively working on a solution...

That looks interesting actually. I remember seeing a video on it recently but forgot to try it. I'm going to give it a whirl now and see how it goes. I do like front row though.

Trust me, Plex blows Front Row out of the water - I particularly love how it grabs all the metadata for TV shows and movies. It was originally the Mac OS X fork of XBMC (though is now on a separate development tree), so there are plenty of skins and other tweaks available for it.

Wooh, this is looking promising! Just been playing with it there and let me just say that J-blk is right in saying it beats frontrow! I have only been messing with it for 10 or so minutes but God is it a slick interface. Can't wait to have a proper run through with it later. I would recommend that everyone try it at least. And performance doesn't seem to be an issue as on their site i see several users have it running on several generations Mac Mini's

You'll love it even more as you use it - the buffer feature I mentioned above really helps with playing stuff over the network or on weaker hardware. I use it with my Core Duo 1.6Ghz Mini and everything up to 720p .mkv works great. If you have any questions, just let me know - I've been using it for ages. The forums are very helpful too and you should find most questions already answered there.
