I am in so much trouble and dont know what do do

I work in the construction industry and started work again last year after a 4 year break. anyway took over somebody elses job for a while. My big problem is that i didnt submit certain documents to revenue as i was misleadingly led to believe that i didnt have to by the previous employee. Now i have just found out that this was all wrong and is likely to cost the company absolte thousands to rectify and I am fast running out of time. I am sick with worry and nobody else knows about this. I really have considered ending it all and I swear that is no joke... I do have a family and that is what is stopping me. I am so sick with worry. The boss is so unapproachable and I wish that I could just open up and tell him but it so hard (easy for everyone else to say).

I know I should just be hom#nest but I cant do it.... i keep looking for ways out. Oh please help me, I am desperate. I go to bed at night hoping that I wont wake up ... and that would be the end of it all!!

It's just a bit of tax. Not like it's a couple of hundred thousand euro that you might owe. Killing yourself because of a bit of tax non-payment is going to look a bit pointless.

I suggest you talk to a tax advisor or accountant. No need to get into a knot, you're not going to be arrested over it.

The only way out of this is to sort it out.....leaving problems like this with the expectation that they will dissapear, will only make matters worse!
I have dealt with clients in the past whereas they owed possibly the worth of your house to Revenue, some didn't even get a fine. They did however have to set up a repayment plan, a small amount to be paid per month.
Do yourself a favour pick up the phone on Monday and ring Revenue it may not be as bad as you seem to think, they are nice enough to deal with, give yourself some peace of mind.....chin up :)

    Thanks for the replies...

My biggest problem is that I am a self employed bookkeeper with this firm (albeit not a very good one). It suited everyone for me to work this way!! Can he sur me?

Problems become bigger when you try to hide them.Ring Revenue and explain, ask them what options you have. If it comes to it, you'll have to sit down with your boss, but you can always figure out your other options first. But you need to calm down and stop thinking it's the end of your world. The first thing to do is ring Revenue and take it from there.

Yes. If you are self-employed, then you should have professional indemity insurance. (It may be called something else in this country, but the idea is the same: it covers you if a client sues you for incompetence.)

All the other advice in this thread is based on it being a problem with your personal taxes. But reading your post, I am thinking it's a problem with the company's taxes. If that is right, then you need to approach the manager ASAP. It will be difficult, but it NEEDS to be done. Be very factual, don't lay blame, but do say what happened:
    • <<previous employee>> told me X
    • so I did Y
    • however now I've found that Z

The manager may well be angry. But if s/he has any sense, s/he will quickly move past this to thinking about how to fix the problem. This will probably involve conversations with the Revenue, and possibly with a professional accountant. If you are lucky, you will be asked to stick around to help fix the problem. If not, you will be looking for a new job. That's one of the risks you take when you're self employed.

    Good luck.
