New MBP snail pace internet

    Hi All,

Just thought I would run this one by ye, as I have run out of ideas at this stage.

As some of you will have seen I have a new MBP, and I was setting it up this weekend. The first thing I did was migrate the old MBP to the new one, so I essentially have clone machines. Running on the same wifi network the old machine performs perfectly but the new one runs at a snails pace, literally. Software update is taking 3hrs+ on the new one, both on wifi and wired connections. Now everything should be setup exactly the same, so there really should not be any difference but I decided that just to be sure I would start again and wipe the machine and go for a clean install - same thing happens.

I have gone through all the setting and checks that I can think of and cannot find any answers. I have read through the various threads on Apple talking about wifi problems etc, but the same thing happens on the wifi. Its def not the network, and doesn't seem to be any profile issue so...

I can't ring Apple to scream at them until Monday, so thought I'd check to see if you lot had any ideas!

grrrrrr, between this and the damaged casing im not a happy camper!

My suggestion: Get a new one from apple! LOL

After the dodgy casing marks and now this, if i were you i'd just try for a replacement

Thinking the same myself tbh! Just curious all the same though. I prob will ring em and request a replacement on Monday though.

Yep, I have to agree with Johnk123 there, between the case and now this, they should definitely replace it ASAP for you.

I got one of the new MacBooks, not a Pro and set it up as a new machine right from the start - not having those problems at all so I can't see how it would be a software problem (apparently the new MBs and MBPs are running a slightly tweaked version of Leopard but they share that same version).

One thing I have noticed though on the MB (which my "old" MBP and Mini do not do) is that Adium loses connection to MSN frequently for an instant and reconnects. Haven't given it much thought though and definitely not having speed problems.

Is it just the internet that's slow on it ? What about network transfers from one computer to another on your own network? Does the port make any difference, wifi/ethernet ?

Network migration was slow, but nothing to gauge that on to say whether it was abnormally slow or not.

Port made no difference. Wired and wireless both deadly slow.

Have you tried moving a large file from one machine to the other via wired connection ? I just trying to understand where the problem lies.

If you can move files around on your network without issue then we can look at the other protocols involved in web transfers. I'd be curious to know if ftp transfers on the internet work, or WebDAV shares etc. It would rule out the hardware if those transfers worked I think.

Moving files works, but slowly. Have only tried files over ethernet though, not over wifi, but its still very slow. Net is slow over both.

It would be important to know if both interfaces are effected. If they are then I'd be looking towards a software problem as the likelihood of both interfaces being broken is slim. Could you try a re-install from the Leopard discs ?

I've never done a migration before, does it clone the drive completely ?

Did all of that! Didn't make a blind bit of difference to the speed!

After a wonderful 1 hour chat with Apple this morning (urgh), they eventually gave me an RMA. Oddly this was entirely based on the minor cosmetic scratch on the lid rather than the technical issues. In fact, they barely listened to me about my story.

Of course the worry now is that they will take one look at the scratch (small) and think 'what the hell is the problem' and either send me back that machine or some other dud just to be meh! Urgh. Fingers crossed it works out this time!

    Rev. A problems YET AGAIN?

I don't think its that simple. I think it is just a sick machine, which can happen in any rev to be honest. This is not a documented problem associated with this series of machines, it is just a freak hardware flaw, or so it seems.

On my new MB, a full Software Update any of the small problems I had - especially the performance of the Airport.

You can download the installs on Apples website and burn them to disk etc.

See, that I can live with. A software problem with a patch! Glad you got the little issues sorted, how is it going for you otherwise?

Everything is good, really loving the backlit keyboard.

I've went from Powerbook -> Blackbook -> Sony Vaio -> Macbook

And this definitely feels like a 13" Powerbook in terms of the quality inside.

I'm getting the hang of the new trackpad, and only really got a few hours with it last night, just updating and installing apps.

The real test comes when I throw CS4 etc. at it later on tonight.
