Asus seem to have a good lineup of gaming-orientated laptops at reasonable prices

The GPU is what you're interested in, if you're spending big bucks and want something 'high-end', you don't want anything below a 8800M/9800M. The 8700M and 9700M cards are too weak to be considered high-end.

    In order of performance:
    8800M GTS
    9800M GTS
    8800M GTX = 9800M GT
    9800M GTX
There's a few other cards (9800M GS etc) in there, Nvidia's line is pretty confusing and hard to keep track of :pac:

Ati have a Mobility 3870 out now, which provides performance roughly equivalent to the 8800M GTS, but usually cheaper. Apparently the mobility HD4850 and 4870 are shipping soon, MSI have announced the GT725 with HD4850, so major manufacturers cant be too far behind.

Dell M1730 with Sli 8800M GTX is a good option, due for replacement soon though.

Alienware M17 with Crossfire (ie 2X) Ati HD3870.

Asus do some 15" and 17" with 9800M GPUs. Not sure if they're available in this region though. Ive seen ones with 9700m, that card is not good enough to drop big bucks on though.

Toshiba have some high-end Qosmio's with 9800 series cards.

Clevo make some high-end gaming laptops, they are sold in the UK by vendors such as Novatech, Rockdirect, KobaltComputers. Theres a 15" with 9800M GTS/GT (M860TU) and a 17" that goes up to 9800M GTX.

All of which are identified as faulty. They will be covered for 2 years after your purchase regardless of your warranty option (longer if you buy 3 or 4 years) but in the end you are pretty much guaranteed any of those cards above will require at least one round of manufacturer repair.

You're better off to investigate the ATI cards.

Nvidia's line is pretty simple. in number order. duh :p but it goes from LE, GS, GT, GTS, GTX. Each of those classes has different basic properties. For instance the Light Edition is targetted for low power consumption, (but also low performance)

if you can find an ATI Mobility 4850/4870: Get It. No ifs ands or buts.

The only cards that have been confirmed affected are cards based on the G84 and G86 core. None of the above are based on those cores. Duh :p
