    Hi,

I have a Gaggia machine and it came with a plastic coffee tamp, but I have a feeling that a different tamp would be better suited. What should I be looking for if I was to get a new one ?

    Thanks

58mm tampers. Flat or convex (up to you).

58mm will leave a slight gap at the sides. If you want something totally snug, you could get a Reg Barber custom made. Mr Magnolia got one of these for his Gaggia, I think it was 58.4mm (he'll be able to tell you for sure).

It'll work out more expensive than a generic 58mm though.

Get the heaviest tamper you can find/afford, it'll make your tamping and therefore your shots so much more consistent.

Yeah, mine's a 58.4 for the bottomless portafilter, the gaggia basket seems even bigger again. I could even have gone another couple of decimal points.

If you are going for a reg barber, get a good calipers and measure the internal diameter a few times in a few different cross sections. Otherwise a 58mm is a safe bet.

I have one of these for my Gaggia. It's a standard 58mm and it's perfect for me. I'm sure a slightly larger one would be a more snug fit, but I have zero issue with this one.
