Without knowing what budget you have I would advise for your first car getting a good quality small size car like a Fiesta or Micra or Starlet....anywhere from 97 to 00 depending on what you can afford.....there should be no problem picking one up for around €1500.....

That way you can get all your little mistakes over with like hitting the kerb...bollards....gate posts....other cars....hopefully not...lol

Then after a years driving you can buy as good a car as you can afford....

    Hope that helps

A Mk2 Fiat Punto (1999-2005) is great as it has the 'girly' button which makes the steering really light (you can turn it with one finger!) which is great for 3pt turns, driving in traffic and parking.

You dont have to get a matchbox!!

I find Yaris type cars actually awkward to drive.Size doesnt matter when you are out on the road and parking isnt an issue in anything smaller than a Rolls imo.

Peugeot 306 are a nice car

Lancer's are cheap, reliable and ok to drive.

    Astra's are also good.

Micra IMO. Cheaper than a yaris, 206 or swift, more reliable than a Fiesta or Punto. Easy to drive as a dodgem.

    Exception: If you're over 5 foot 10, don't bother.

Have one for test tomorrow - can turn on a sixpence and are quite pokey too! (1.2 '99 Jap Import with roof sign!) I'm 5ft 10, can fit in comfortably with loads more room on runners. Only thing difficult to get used to is the clutch - the biting point is much higher in that than any other car I've driven (just takes a few junctions to get used to ;)). Easier to drive than a Focus or 206, as you can see the corner of the bonnet - especially good if you're learning as it has unbeatable allround visability.

Been warned to avoid the Swift like the plague, apparently the crumple zones are your knees and if you thought the Punto was bad for overheating the Swifts overheat to beat the band!

Hyandai Getz, cheap insure, decent milage, small but not too small which is important and gets a decent NCAP rating for safety :)

Sure it may not look great but sure its safer then a micra :)
