Selling a car in the recession...

    Hi,

I have a problem I've been pondering for a while. I need to sell my car, but no garage will take it for Part-Ex and if they do they are trying to rob me blind. I need to sell the car due to a little arrival coming soon, but I'm only in no way desperate to sell it so I wont take just any offer.

So I'm trying to come up with some kind of different way or idea to sell the car, but still make the minimum of €15,000(ish) that its worth.

I considered a raffle for €10 a ticket. Advertise on web sites, forums etc, I would only need to sell 1500 tickets to make the amount. The problem is, your not allowed to hold a lottery or you need some kind of license to have a raffle (which is stupid)

Can anybody think of any way that suits people at the chance of getting a new car, but still without folking over 15k cash.

I'm trying my best to beat this damn recession... trying not to let me man get me down (and all that!) :)

    All wacky ideas welcome!

    DG.

Took my Mams 07 Corsa to an opel garage in Cork. She was interested in a 09 Corsa. On the Forcourt he had two 07 Corsas. Both had higher mileage the her car( 11000kms) and less spec. Both were priced at around 13000. He offered 7950 for her car.

They will put themself out of business if they keep up like this

    They are scandalous alright.

I have a Smart Roadster-Couple Brabus. Its an unusual 2 seater sports car, so there is a very niche market, so thats why I'm thinking if I could think of a raffle like way to sell it. People in this climate/recession wont pay 15k for it, but for €10 for a chance to own it, they might give it a go... I dunno... be worth it for a few euro!

The 2nd hand car market is in the toilet right now. I know several guys that used to make a living by buying and selling cars, but they haven't been selling a single thing for months now. If you're trying to sell a car, then be prepared to take a massive hit on the price, or just keep the car.

The raffle is an interesting idea, if you can get he permit to do it, but you'll have to sell all the tickets, or you won't get enough money.

Not really that stupid. What's to stop you selling a ticket to your other half, for example, and fixing the raffle to say that she wins. You get the money and the car. An episode of father ted springs to mind...

What a load of rubbish. They don't want second hand cars as there is no market to sell them, hence the low offering price.

If it was that easy to shift the cars and make a profit then people should sell them privately.

If no one is buying cars ,why should a car dealer be any different ?

I was in your position last August. I noticed how there was no one biting when I advertised on carzone for my initial asking price. Anyway - It was obvious that market was completely dead (or dying). So I dropped the price by 25%, by far the cheapest one on carzone for the make and model and mileage. I had three calls in the space of an hour. Sold it 24 hours later. I just wanted rid of it. My family gave me a load of the "ye big eejit" remarks at the time... "you let them have it for free" type of thing. I am fully aware that I sold it at a price below any garage (that was the whole damn idea - I undercut them in order to shift the bloody thing... bit like Lidl...).
Which is better? Have it sitting there in the drive losing more value by the day? Or take the hit now, accept it, move on? I chose the latter... 'twas the right choice and not only that, the bargaining power of the 2nd hand car buyer improved even more once I shifted it, so I picked up a real bargain afterwards.

I have another question on a wider issue though... What is wrong with carrying your new addition in a car that is worth 15k?! Is it a convertible 2-seater or something??! Is it not up to standard for carrying a newborn in a child seat?

You could find yourself dropping that to 11 or even 10 in order to shift it.
