Newbie Question

Hi, my girlfriend uses Skype on her laptop to make calls. I'm thinking of buying her a skype phone, but i'm a complete newbie.

I saw a "dual mode cordless phoen with skype" for about €150. It says in the spec "Connect the base station to your phone line &, broadband router". We don't have a landline in the house, so would I be paying for an extra that she wouldn't use? Here's the link to said phone.

I also saw a usb cordless phone, but am I right in thinking that it has to be always within distance of the USB dock?

    Any advice is much appreciated!

The Netgear will work without the landline, it's just an extra option that it has. Hard to comment on the USB "cordless phone" without further info.

Damn, in the midst of all the online xmas shopping I forgot about this thread. Thanks for the info. I'm still looking around and found some good and bad reviews of the netgear phone. I didn't know skype had a shop and I'm a bit bug eyed from looking around.

I have about €150 to spend and I like the idea of a cordless phone and not being tied to a computer. From the skype shop, can anyone recommend one of the phones?

I've read good reviews about the Philips 841, can anyone recommend it?

I recently heard stuff about this on Newstalk Radio. I haven't used them so am not vouching for their quality, buy Three [mobile phone operator] sell skype phones.

    Check here and here.

What I WILL say is that if you are going to go down this road, you make sure you are on the correct data plan. I believe that they have a special skype plan for something like €5 a month.

    * Edit * Actually, there might not be a €5 charge at all. Still advise to research it or call in to a 3 store for a chat. Phones seem to be going for about €99

SkypeOut isn't supported with 3 :( My gf wants to use with her skype account at home rather than use her mobile phone, she only wants to use her mobile when she's out of the house and use SkypeOut to call mobiles during the day if she's at home. I like the idea of free landline calls to anywhere in europe aswell :)

I was considering that one, but we rarely leave computers turned on in the house and booting them up everytime to make a phonecall defeats the purpose of using a phone compared to just using the computer.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, I'm thinking more and more about the phillips phone, but there's a note on skype saying "Note: UK and Ireland Plug NOT available!" Does this mean I can't use it here or I have to get some type of plugs for it? What kind of plugs are they?
