Hair testing for allergies?

Hi , I am attending an accupuncturist at the moent for skin problems (psoriasis). Last week they recommended an allergy test for €58. I reckoned it would cost €55 to see my GP and then the cost of the test so I went with this instead. The test was carried out from a sample of my hair and then sent to Scotland for testing. I got results yeaterday and am very suprised to see the vast amount of allergens listed as severe. eg. White sugar, Crisps with MSG, Ice cream, Full fat milk, Egg yolk, Hard cheese, chocolate, Nylon, wool. Peanuts, to mention a few. I also have low sensitivity to yeast, egg white, soft cheese, yoghurt, Cocoa etc.
Can anyone tell me how accurate this type of testing is? Should I just go to my GP or would the outcome be similar? What is a low sensitivity? Can I take these in moderation or not at all? If I have a high sensivity to nuts, should I avoid them at all costs? I have never felt any reaction before except from hives which could be caused by any of these.

to be fair - its not an allergen test unless its done under the controlled circumstances of an immunologist.

I looked up places purporting to use this technology where you analyse the energy balance of hair samples.

    I smell something.........

I would recommend you confirm this with a qualified consultant immunologist before accepting such a grossly restrictive dietary choice. There are two GP referral clinics run in st. james's and beaumont.

DrIndy, thanks for your reply. I do feel that the vast amount of food and textile I am apparently allergic to or have high sensitivity to would mean a restricted life style.

it might not be that restricted - just moderating exactly what allergens you are exposed to at one time, I know someone with chronic allergies - dust mites, dairy, eggs, nuts, the list is endless, yet they live a perfectly normal life because they avoid high sensitive allergens, only having them if their system is perfectly clean
