Interclub - Playing for more than one club?

This seems more frequent in Junior golf, as Juniors are often in a couple of clubs, but what's the story with playing say, Junior Cup for one club and Senior Cup for another?

I'm fairly sure in the past it was perfectly legit. But did I hear something has changed in the rules that you must declare for one club?

Personally, having tried it once in my youth, I think it's a disaster and to be avoided. It's never as simple as suggested and there's usually some kind of politics that comes with it.

I'm talking about things like a guy off 3 h'cap playing Barton Cup in his home club but not being low enough to make the Senior Cup panel. His second club have a couple of 4's on their Senior Cup panel and there's a spot there for him. Why not go for the experience?

There's obviously logic in doing it but for me, it's a complicated situation that a young golfer could do without.

Anyone know if the rule has changed? Would be interested to know what other people's take on this is.

    Hi,

Not certain but as far as I understood, you could only play in one club, usually where you handicap is held. Is tehre anything to clarify this on the GUI website?

    All the best,

The old "cup tied" scenario applies.

You may play for one club in the Junior Cup and another in Senior Cup.

However, once you play in an event, you cannot represent another club in the same competition that year.

    some extracts....

General rule 2 says that you have to be a member of the club from which you are selected (duh!)... and rule 12 says "Whilst the players on each team may be changed no player shall play for more than one club in any one of these Tournaments during the season."

So that to me confirms the logical decision that you can't play for two different clubs in the same competition but you could play different competitions representing different clubs (that you are a member of) like playing Barton Cup for Club A and Junior Cup for Club B.

Yeah so the rule hasn't changed.

To be honest I think it's a crap situation. While the benefits are there - a player who really wants to play in, say Junior Cup and can't get in their home club set-up can still play with a second club. And they might prove themselves there and get in their home team the following season. And the second club gets a player into their team that gives them a boost.

But the player is likely to bugger off the following year if they get in at home. And of course, in the early season the player might be pushing for their home panel and be saying something like "well I have to see" to the second club.

I know at least one Dublin club that gives "temporary" membership to very low country players moving to Dublin to work, on the promise that they'll play Senior Cup, ditching their home club panel, even though it's usually just for one year.

I appreciate that it's tempting for a young golfer who's either just missed their home panel, or wants to play with another club who have a better panel, but for me it goes against the fundamental idea of club golf. If you'd rather play for a different club, fine, make it your home club. But this kind of mercenary stuff just doesn't sit well with me.

Maybe that's a little preachy of me but that's what I think.
