Did you watch The Deerhunter before the Larry Holmes v Gerry Cooney fight in 1982?

    Friday 11 June 1982

    Larry Holmes v Gerry Cooney.

One of the most eagerly anticipated boxing matches ever.

As it wasn't starting until 3.00 or 4.00am (can't remember which), RTE1 decided to screen The Deerhunter once the Late News had aired. In those days, closedown normally took place around midnight so this was a rare treat to watch 'tv through the night'.

Quite a few schoolboys stayed up that night and most of us in two channel land watched The Deerhunter. An amazing film. The fight wasn't bad either.

Anyone else remember this televisual feast?

i do remember the event but not as much about the fight itself .

Intrestingly enough i saw the Deerhunter on it's release a few years previous in 1979 in an Amsterdam picture house .I found the russian roulette scenes a bit hard to stomach because at the time, scenes like that were groundbreaking and it was the first post viet nam movie to deal with that War objectively, unlike early films like the Green Berats (john wayne ) 1971 which was very hollywood pro America -anti communist .

ah yes, I'm pretty sure the tape or reel gave up the ghost around 2am but they definitely showed it again the following night

God, yes. I stayed up with my brother and fell asleep before the movie fell apart. Then went to bed thinking "what the hell" abput the boxing, but couldn't get to sleep and instead got back up and watched Gerry Cooney get brain damaged by Holmes. First rule of boxing: never bet on the white guy.
