They'll be clashing with the Dunne fight which is on the same night so that won't help. Of course they'll also be banking on some Irish interest in the finals which can't be guaranteed either although hopefully the likes of O'Neill and John Joe Joyce will make it that far.

No chance. It's an Irish language station, so it'll be as normal.
I'll definitely be watching it rather than the Dunne fight if they clash - better quality matchups.

Thrilled to hear Lomachenko will be there, I'd only been googling his name today to see if there was any mention of him going pro. I'd say the promoters are queing up for him.

Are any of the English channels showing the championships ?

Really looking forward to the Joyce-Lomachenko fight.

Lomachenko being the star of the 2008 Games.

Mouth watering fight in prospect; I just hope David doesn't get
    bombed out early!

good luck to Joyce but I dont think anyway really thinks that he will get past Lomachenko.

As an aside Murray is whining like a little biatch all over the Manchester Evening News today about being robbed. Said he had Joyce down legitimately in the first and it wasnt counted and then only got his first point in the last round after Joyces low blow.

So according to he he was robbed in China cos he was fighting a Chinese guy and now he was robbed in England because....he is English???

John Joe Joyce won his last 16 bout this afternoon. He beat John Tain of Scotland 20-3. I think he now faces Dimitar Shtilyanov from Bulgaria for a medal.

Eamon o'kane and con sheehan are in action tonight.

    2 more wins last night.
Eamon O'Kane and Con Sheehan into the quarters. Unlucky for Darren O'Neill though he lost.

So thats 6 into the quarters.......c'mon the irish.

60kg Famil Suleymanov (AZE) lost to Ross Hickey (IRL) 6 - 1

2008-11-06 64kg Egidijus Kavaliauskas LTU Adriani Vastine FRA 10:1

The score above I believe is a loss for one of the Olympics finest fighters.
In the Olympics, his first name was Alexis

Can anyone confirm if this guy is the same guy who represented France at 64kgs in Beijing.

How anyone beat him so decisively is some feat. Vastine was ultra slick and cute and effective and was robbed against Diaz in the 64 kg semis in Beijing!

Alexis Vastine fought in the Olympic and infact beat Egidijus Kavaliauskas in the first round 13:2.

Could be a brother - if not its some turn around in just a couple of months!

    Press release from IABA:
Irish middleweight Eamon O'Kane joined John Joe Joyce and Ross Hickey in the semi finals of the 37th European
Senior Championships after recording a deserved win over Andranik Hakoyban in Liverpool tonight.

All three boxers are guaranteed bronze from the Championships, maintaining Ireland's remarkable sequence of having won medals at every international tournament - including the Olympic Games - entered this year.

O'Kane, from the Immaculata club in Belfast, chalked up a 6-4 victory over the Armenian 2008 Olympian to set up tomorrows semi final with Maxim Koptyakov of Russia at the Greenbank Academy.

O'Kane's victory arrived less that an hour after light welterweight John Joe Joyce staged yet another showdown with Hungarian Gyula Kate following an edge of the seat 9-7 win over Bulgarian 2004 European lightweight champion Dimitar Stilianov.

That verdict ensured that Joyce, from the St Michael's Athy club, would meet Kate - who he beat at last
Augusts Olympics - in Thursdays semi final - their fifth meeting in the last three years.

But while Joyce and O'Kane had their hands raised in victory there was disappointment for Tipperary heavyweight Con Sheehan who was beaten 4-2 by Romanian, Petrisor Gananau this evening.

Earlier today, featherweight David Oliver Joyce bowed out at the quarter final stage after he was beaten 10-2 by Ukrainian Olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko.

Lomachenko won silver medallist at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago and also claimed the boxer of the tournament award at the 29th Olympiad in Beijing.

Ross Hickey won his quarter final bout on Tuesday and will face Vazgen Safaryants of Belarus in Thursdays lightweight semi final.

The preliminary rounds of the European Senior Championships are being held at the Greenbank Academy with the finals pencilled in for the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday November 15th.

All eleven finals will be televised live by TG4. Friday is a rest day at the European Senior Championships.

All the Irish lads comprehensively beaten today

    http://www.abae.co.uk/News_Archive/2008/November/News/European_Boxing_Championships_day_7.asp

Guess it’s back to the drawing board for JJ Joyce, say it must be very frustrating for him to lose to Kate again after beating him in the Olympics. Whatever happened to Darren O’Neill I’ll never know??? This was his time to step up with Egan and Sutherland gone, great pity.

The man who would have been very capable of bring home gold was John Joe Nevin, unfortunately he wasn’t boxing but it should be a great scrap in the Senior Finals between him and Lindberg.

3 bronze medals, not a bad return. Would have liked a finalist, some say that might be greed but great sporting countries are greedy at the end of the day!

I wasn't at all confident of Joyce repeating his win over Kate from Hungary.
The Olympic fight was a hard fought win and I thought the Hungarian was unlucky not to get a few scores in that Olympic bout. He was by far the stronger man

WEll done on another successful Irish boxing team ! What a year for Irish Amateur boxing. Its just getting stronger and stronger. Long may it last :)

Just saw Lomachenko in the final and early on he seemed nearly uninterested !
Was only 2-1 up and I was wondering if he was just going through the motions, but then he turned up the heat and I thought he should have been credited with a lot more punches but he threw so many rapid fire combinations I suppose it was hard to get all 5 judges to press any one at the same time.

The real highlight though was for around a minute in the 4th Lomachenko stood in the corner and never bothered moving out. The Russian couldn't land a punch and seemed totally bamboozled at how to penetrate the perfect defence of the Ukranian. Comfortable win for a Lomachenko that never got out of 2nd gear.

    Oleksandr Usyk really impressed me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

Really pissed off with two finals which were stopped because of cuts.

One was Kate the guy JJJoyce lost to and it was a small little nick at the very edge of his eyebrow. It wasn't even dripping (more like a graze) and even if it had been it wouldn't have obstructed his view. Stopped !!

The other was a German who was ahead by 2 points with the 3rd round almost over. He had a bleeding cut UNDER the right eye and obviously as he was winning it wasn't affecting him. STOPPED !!

    This is pure BULLSH!T !!
They're afraid of offending some Mammys who might be looking, meanwhile fellas who've trained all their lives for a huge moment like this are completely overlooked. I'm raging at this crap !!

What a crap excuse. I wonder was that the boxers and their trainers reason or was it the IABA. I didn't think that 'selectivity' would be tolerated!

Walshb you hit the nail right on the head, not going to elaborate but you are very much correct.

Although there has been a tremendous amount of success with Irish Amateur Boxing this year, the IABA are an organisation shall we say still ‘wanting’ in many ways.

to be fair the ABA dont send much of their Olympic team either - same goes for a lot of countries including Russia

Barnes and Nevin should have been there, end of!

i'm not disagreeing with you Walshy, I'm just pointing out the facts.

Even if Barnes and Nevin didnt go why not let others compete?

I know you are not disagreeing.
And I agree, send your best always. Something is not right when two of your
Olympic medalists are not boxing in the worlds 2nd most important event, or third, if
    you include the WC
