New PS3 and blank screen?

I bought a PS3 in Tesco last week but am having some trouble with it. I can't play Blu Ray or ordinary dvds. I have it connected by HDMI and the menu screen comes up in 1080i but when I select the BD or DVD the screen goes blank and stays that way. I tried a PS3 game and it played perfectly however when I ejected it the screen went black again inside of returning to the menu screen.

I've tried two different HDMI cables, two different HD Tv's and also the scart cable that came with it. I've also rang the Irish support phone number and posted on the playstation forum. They feel it's a problem with the resolution but I can't seem to solve the problem.

Anybody have this problem? Thanks for any help!

Have you checked the settings for video display on the PS3?

There's an automatic set up you can run that will detect the available resolutions on your tv and adjust the ps3 accordingly. You say your tv is HD but is that full HD, i.e. 1080p or HD ready, i.e. 720p. If its HD ready and you have the ps3 trying to output at 1080i, then it won't display iirc. Set the ps3 to select all the available resolutions and it will use the highest that your tv can handle.

Next step is to try the tv's own video set up. If you say that its displaying games, then this probably isn't the problem but check you have the proper channel selected, i.e. HDMI, AV etc.

Good Advice there from Dave, try the 1080p if it is full hd, as when i connected mine recently it took me about 40mins to sort it out, frustrated the hell out of me, worth the frustration though,

    Try daves advice

I had a similar problem with my pc when I bought a 26 inch lcd tv to replace my 17 inch dell screen. My graphics card was configured to output at 1024 * 768 but the tv (which was only hd ready) could only output at a max of 720p so the screen was blank. I had to reconnect my old monitor and change the video settings on teh graphics card to match the tvs before I could get a picture.

The fact that the ps3 can search for your tvs output settings is a step up imo.

My TV is HD ready and has no problem displaying 1080i.

Well I brought it back to Tesco and got a replacement. The new one doesn't go to a blank screen when I put in a BLU RAY. Hurray!!!:D:D I'm using the scart cable though as I'm half afraid to try the HDMI now. Unfortunately I've no PS3 games to try one of them. Strange that the first PS3 would play games but not BD.

Watching a bluray over scart? That's like drinking amstel out of an erdinger bottle:eek:
Really does sound like you just hadn't ran the display setup and selected resolutions that your TV can handle... I'd say plug in the HDMI cable and do as Dave said if you haven't already

Mate I tried everything with the last one. I set it to 1080i, 720p and even 576 or whatever. It wouldn't work with the scart either unlike the new one.

I do agree watching BD with scart is absurd though. I'm going to have to brave the HDMI waters again.
