600 is a bit low unless you want something to just get you by? If you wanted performace you might have to stretch just a wee bit.

don't skimp on monitor, RAM and hard drive space.

They are the three main factors for a photography PC.

I would second that. You can save on graphic card - the standard ones are good enough for processing photographs. Buy extra memory instead. I have 4 GB and it is just OK for processing.

Only problem with an iMac is their screens aren't the best imo and you'll be stuck with a glossy screen. Some people hate that.

600e will be tough. A good screen alone will set you back half of that. Maybe try getting a cheap Dell (minus monitor) and see if you can get a nice monitor 2nd hand?

I have a compaq, bought almost 3 years ago!!!!! Loads of space on it, but with both my pictures and hubbies music we do use extra harddrives also which is a good thing too, we wont loose our stuff if we ever crash! I like the speed of it when editing the shots and considering prices and the value we have gotten out of it it was not bad at all. It did cost 1k at the time but we invested in a better monitor and faster ram (i think). I'm sure there are cheaper versions also.

I have a Dell laptop, its pretty good but vista is pulling me back constantly so I would recommend trying to get XP. I hear there is a vista replacement on the cards though. Our previous desktop was also a Dell that was brilliant. Last laptop was hp and loved it until it started going funny, wouldnt recommend as mine went and my sisters who was bought at the same time also started to go, only for mine was lost cause she knew what was happening.

I recently got a dell off their stock site (dell.ie/stock I think?) quad core 4 gig ram 512 graphics card and a few other bells and whistles beside for 465 I think? Bloody fast with the quad core :D Can't recommend one of those babies enough! You have to be fast with the site though as stuff tends to go quickly. I think they update the site with new machines on a thursday..

Still of the opinion if you have the room that CRT monitors are the way to go. I got my 19" for nothing :)
