Aww, god bless Ken Rockwell :-)

    http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/why-we-love-film.htm

Thats of course up until the point that he flip-flops dramatically and starts extolling the overwhelming benefits of some €150 digital P&S

    Flip flops?

You mean tries to divert the fact he's talking ****e. :)
    No computer required, ever!
No - Just hours in the darkroom, and when you're sick of that, you can spend a few hours in front of a scanner.

Besides, everyone knows he should be sitting in front of a Mac :pac:

However. I did just send off an order with a mate heading to NY to pick me up a 120 Polaroid back and a Canonette.

    D'oh.

i like ken rockwell. an ornery git whose opinion you frequently disagree with is much more interesting to read than someone extolling your opinions back to you.

Ken loves macs ! (except for the couple of articles where he goes on about how PCs are much much better :D)

What, a little QL17 ? I've wanted one of them for a while. There was actually one on sale in Barnardos' in rathmines a while back. I rushed in eagerly and was told I couldn't buy it  Turns out they have a window display which they only sell saturday mornings ... Stupid charity shops...

What are you using the pola back on ? I have one for my bronica. I only ever used it the once, little 6x6cm polaroids for about €2 a pop didn't really appeal.

That's Rockwell's biggest problem - Utter inconsistancy - One minute he's sh*ting on about how his top of the range Nikon DSLR is great, then he starts on about how good film is, and how digital will never beat it, before saying his D50 is the best camera he ever had.

Yep, the QL17 - Nice little camera by the looks of it - Is in good nick - Second hand in Adorama. I don't know why I bought it tbh. I have my Zorki, but it dosn't have a meter... but then again, I have my handheld meter... It's much smaller though.

The Pola is going on the Hassy for the moment, but it's eventually going to end up on a project camera I'm working on, whenever I get around to buying my next bag of clay. For $54 dollars, it's not too bad.

I agree. He is always interesting and entertaining but can be inconsistent. The overall point he makes though is that when all is said and done it's about the photographer, not the camera. He has produced some cracking shots from, for example, a 40 year old Olympus Trip35 (a classic P&S) as well as from the most advanced DSLRS. He is a *very good* photographer. He walks the walk. I can put up with his idiosyncrasies.

    I think he's hilarious.

The time component of film versus digital is an interesting point. I work in B&W both in the darkroom and via photoshop with scanned negs, and I think you probably end up spending about the same amount of time trying to get a decent print out of each. The major benefit to digital is reproducibility - although you'd wonder what that does to the idea of editioned prints.
