Hi all. i was reading this post here when someone said PS3 games get installed http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055412448

I dont have a PS3 but will be getting one soon... Do all games need an install like a PC?

If you install the game do you still need the disc?

I don't think I have ever installed a game, or at least I can't remember doing so and I am currently playing Tiger 09, Dead Space, Force Unleashed, Soul Caliber IV.
Having said that I would imagine that if you did install a game you would still need the disc, would be open to piracy otherwise.

Yes you still need the disk all it does is installs a lot of info to the PS3 so it doesnt have to keep reading the disks speeding up loading times and reducing the amount of work the laser has to do so hopefully prolonging its life.

MGS4 GTA4 and FARCRY 2 all required install

If you install it from a disk, then you need the disk in to play. Even if you install it.

All my disk based games installed on the HDD. Although I only have GT5P, Everybody's Golf, Ornage Box and MGS4. All my other games are direct PSN downloads.

I believe that not all games require an install, some do and some allow you the choice.

Mgs4 and gt5P are the biggest offenders here, taking up ~6Gb each iirc. Ridge racer 7 gives you the option of a 5GB install, and some games (like cod4) don't give you the option. They don't need installs.

Its quicker to find files on the hard drive to on the blu-ray, so it might become a feature in many games, but the xbox is getting mandatory installs for most games so.

    Yay PS3.

Oh yah. And it reduces blu ray noise and fan noise.

the reason for installation is coz the bd is too slow for data transfer in some circumstances, so textures are preloaded onto the harddrive

No, the 360 is all optional installs, will be after the 19th. It may in the future get mandatory installs like some of the bigger PS3 games. All my PS3 games needed even the ones I downloaded an install, same with demos. On the 360 you just dl and play. PS3 is dl, install and then play.
