Ya, the new webmail for first years should be okay though seen as its provided by windows!
Anyone using squirrel mail should think about getting computer services to foward the mail on to a more reliable e-mail provider!

You'd think that, everyone else gets the newer java version and im stuck on normal Office Outlook. Think the old basic hotmail compared to today's one.

Staff? It's probably using Microsoft Exchange so you're tied into using Outlook or a special web interface (if available).

I don't know what mine is, I only started here this year, but I really don't like it. It's like my fourth or fifth email account anyway so I've only opened it a few times, thought 'ugh' and promptly closed it again.

But now its a Windows Live ID so it works on Xbox Live and MSN quite handy. Don't think it expires either.

You are using Windows Live so. First years and anyone else who enrolled in NUIG this year got the new service provided by Windows Live.

Is your email address @nuigalway.ie? If it is then it will definitely expire after you leave. C.S. won't provide a service to people after they have left college.

Hmm, they must not have done the clearout yet or they just missed you doing it :P lol

Sure, *pretend* you haven't coughed up your life's savings to become an alumnus/alumna and keep that email address! :D

Same Live Log-In screen, am able to log into X-Box Live with it, so I don't think Microsoft will let it expire if youre funding it, NUI probably pay a subscription to MS for their service.

It wouldn't be a case of windows letting it expire. The college won't want people using an @nuigalway.ie email address after they leave college. It increases admin work and if you are no longer in the college why would you have a college email? So with that in mind, the college will expire the email address/account.

Windows Live will probably/most definitely/I am sure of it, provide you with a way to change to a new email address while retaining your Live ID/archive/contacts etc because they will want to keep your business. You just won't have an @nuigalway.ie address.

I could be mistaken though and I would be very surprised if I was mistaken.

My NUIM address is still working after leaving in May 07, one of the things I've found about galway is they want to charge you for everything. For instance I got four copies of full transcripts from NUIM sent to me, no charge. Its a tenner per set in Galway! craziness. And thus ended the off topicness.

I only got registered in late November or early December, I haven't even tried out my new NUIG address, or blackboard or any of the other stuff I was missing out on. Hope there's no big announcements up there.

My brothers DCU email still works 2 years after leaving, don't see why they'd stop ours. It makes 0 sense, the extra emails add very little work. Also, everyone's being moved over to Exchange in the Summer. Which is great, means I send and receive emails on my iPhone without having them forwarded to my gmail.

Each email address represents a tasty little target for phishers. They would just love to get their grubby hands on an nuigalway.ie account to take advantage of college's bandwidth and send spam... which is exactly what happened this semester, resulting in the domain being blacklisted and email being unavailable for almost a week for all users (including some staff).

The more addresses, the greater the risk. Then there's disk space, virus scanning, spam detection, backup and processing issues involved in supporting a list of users that grows by the thousands each year.

Using Live mail passes these issues to Microsoft, but for a cost. The more email addresses, the more the college would have to pay the email provider.

I know one of the guilty parties... He'll never do it again after all the slagging!

Beyond this (most people will have the same exam pin forever), and I didn't know the registration ever involved it, I don't see what people need or even use their NUIG mail for.

And mine kept going from last year right up to getting registered in December.
