CZ 453

I recently got a CZ453 and am trying to get the best out of it. Has anyone used one before? What is its favourite ammo? What sort of grouping do you get at 50 & 100 yards? And where can I buy the relevant ammo?
My local gunshop cum hardware outlet has a very limited range of ammo. So far the Federal HV 38gr bullet is proving to be rubbish (value pack box). Magnatec subsonics (got a box off a friend) were not much better.
Lapua Pistol King (again off the same friend) are good out to 50yds (grouping 40mm or so) but after that seem to go largely astray.
Have found the Hawke 3-9 x40 supplied with the rifle to be complete rubbish but thats another story.

You need to specify what kind of accuracy you're looking for. If it's for bunnies, then you should look at the various hollow points out there: Eley, Lapua and RWS make them.

For out and out accuracy for targets then you need target ammo. These rounds would not be hollow point and would all be subsonic. The bullet would look very like the Pistol King.

Eley Match or Tenex, Lapua Master or Midas and RWS R50 or R100 as well as SK Rifle Match or Match.

You should be able to get samples from any good gun shop. Expect to pay anything between €8 and €15 a box.

rrpc is is correct when he says you have to specify what you use the rifle for. I have a CZ varminter that performs well with Federal Match and Lapua with the edge going to the Federal. CCI subsonic I have found poor and often fail to extract live rounds. For a bunny round Remington yellow jackets seem to work well but you have to remember to re zero from sub sonics. 40mm is poor at 50 yards even with hardware store ammo but the rifle will bed in after several hundred rounds or so, and you will also get used to it. Top of the range ammo is only worth buying when your own shooting justifies it. I have a Hawk scope which was all over the place to start with but is now OK, it will never be any better than OK but serves the purpose till I can afford a better one.

    Good luck with it

I forgot to point out that its a .22lr and that it's mainly for hunting. Having said that, the rabbits in my area have been virtually wiped out by myxo so most of my recent forays have been against a shoot n c target at ranges of 50 to 100yds. So in the absence of bunnies I am a de facto target shooter!
I would just like to know what can be reasonably expected from this gun and what ammo does it prefer based on other shooters experience.

Every gun is different, whether the same manufacturer/model or not. You just have to do this the hard way and try each type of ammunition you will be using.

HV's will be different from subs and target ammo will be different from both.

Ammo is the same as anything else, the cheaper stuff is cheap for a reason. The 453 has a fairly heavy barrel and should be good on accuracy, so don't stint on the ammo.

The 453 also has a trigger adjustment for weight, so experiment with that as well.

You'll also need a decent scope. there are many articles on here about scopes research them a bit.

I have a CZ 22lr Style that will shoot 1/2" @50m and head shots on rabbits @100m. I use Eley standard rounds and Lapua Club about €4 a 50 box. Only use the dearer ammo when target shooting they will be over twice the price €10-12 a 50 box.
Once you get a round that suits the gun stick with that round - then you will get to know the range for that bullet. Don't keep changing brands afterwards.
All the HV rounds would never group well for me. I have put about 6000 rounds down the tube now of different brands and those are the 2 I'll only use now.
In fact I was only thinking today that I'll just stick with the Eley standard subs from now on, the gun likes them best and very, very few flyers.

Get the best scope you can afford I use a Nikko nighteater 8-32x60 AG IR @€;260, overkill maybe, but I use it at x12-x16 mag most of the time, I think it's one of the better cheaper scopes. But that scope will now be going on my new CZ 223 varmint until I get the dosh for a new Bushnell.
I got a cheap JSR 6-24x50 secondhand, €35, off the net but it's pure sh!te - so spend once and buy right.

All @50m benchrest off a 6" bi-pod with one 10 shot group, second one I think. The 10 ring is 1" - black centre is 1/2"

I have to admit it was one of my better days

That certainly is nice shooting CliveJ.
TBH my scope doesnt help, the reticle would completely obscure a 1" bull at 50m so its hard to tell where I'm aiming precisely. I'm more used to air rifles and you can get good performance out of a cheap scope at 25M really.
The other thing is that I have only shot about 400 rounds or so and cleaned with a patch after every session (as per instructions). Two guys have now tod me NOT to clean the bore after every use as the best accuracy is achieved after a couple of boxes of bullets. I find this hard to believe though. They also said the residue from the .22lr is not corrosive so I need not worry about pitting etc.
The set trigger on the 453 is brilliant, thought it was a gimmick initially but use it on every shot now.

It's absolutely true, you should not clean a .22 untill you start to get a drop off in accuracy. After cleaning it will take a couple of boxes to bring accuracy back up again. Also after several hundred rounds accuracy should improve as, presumably, the bore gets polished. If you are shooting targets try lining up the crosshairs on the numbers on the scoring rings if the bull is obscured, this will also help to prevent canting the rifle.

    good luck

Only just cleaned out the bore last week to join in the competion shoot at the Midlands range, first time in 4000 rounds of ammo. As sfakiaman says it took a few rounds to come back to group well.

That flippin scope is doing my head in. Adjusting the objective lens to suit the range shifts the point of aim left or right depending on which way I turn it. I havent had the patience to determine if it is also shifting the elevation.
What do ye think of Nikko Sterling scopes?
Iknow i know iknow, I just cant AFFORD more than 250 euro at the mo for a scope.

I use a Nikko Nighteater 8-32x60 AG IR scope, got from opticswarehouse.co.uk and use it on my CZ 22lr Style and find it better than just OK. In my opinion they are one of the better cheap scopes that you can get. With target turrets.
The 60mm objective front lens gives me a good eye view, and I use the scope at x12-x16 zoom all of the time.
This scope will now be going on my new CZ varmint 223 as soon as the license comes down from Dublin.

I was looking through many expensive scopes yesterday and then through the Nighteater today and for the money they are GOOD
I just checked the price of the 8-32x60 AG IR and it is about €230 now with the sterling so low.

Is the scope loose in its rings and turning slightly when you turn the objective, are the rings the right size for the scope. I have used that make before and although the clicks were a bit vague it wasn't a bad scope.
