Will I make contact?

Hi I applied for a graduate programme in a company on the 24th of Oct (so 2 weeks this Friday), I had to send my CV and cover letter to HR, but I have heard nothing back, no "Thank you for your application" etc. Should I email again and ask have the positions been filled? Or what should I say if I email them?

Also, I applied for another trainee position which I would really be interested in and I got this reply:

"At present X is very busy and will not be able to review applications until January. At such time we will be in contact with you and let you know if X would like to meet with you for interview"...... (X being the manager of the department I am applying to).

Is this a brush off? A polite thanks-but no thanks? Or is there an actual possibility they will be in contact again?

    Thanks.

I would contact the first company, although the lack of contact probably means it's a lost cause.

The second one might be (sort of) the truth, but if I were you I'd assume nothing will come of it and keep looking.

    Thanks AARRRGH!

Ya I thought it was a bit strange that they didn't send a reply email. Its for a graduate programme and they said that they definately would be hiring people. What would I say in my email? Just ask if the positions have been filled? Or just simply, that I was enquiring if they had received my email?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for the other one though, it's in an area I really want to get into, but I will keep looking!

I would send a very polite e-mail saying you are just wondering if they received your application, if they know when a decision will be made, and that you are really keen on working there as you like their products/whatever.
