2nd hand xbox 360 -ring of death -warranty

    I foolishly bought an xbox 360 2nd hand on ebay about 4 months ago and now it doesn't work as it has the 'ring of death' hardware problem. I tried to register the console on xbox support so as to take advantage of the warranty but I was told it was already registered. Support said i would have to pay £60 to get it fixed with them. I've already contacted the previous owner that owned the console but he bought it from someone else and has no details(yea right!). Can I re-register the console (I have the serial number) or is there no way around paying the fee to xbox to fix.
