Carburettor Overhaul

    Hi I am looking for info on a garage called Mac Namara's in the Dublin. I think it in town Dublin City Centre or close to.
    I need to get the Carburettor Overhauled on my 1978 Corvette and was told this was the place to get it done. Has anyone got
    a number or a address for the place

    Buy a new one. They are not that expensive and are readily available.

    You're wasting your time having it rebuilt by McNamaras.

    Where would I buy something like that and how much would it cost.
    I called them and they said it would cost 150 - 250 but I had to get the kit in myself. I'll put a new post up as well to see if I have any luck

    Buy the kit and do it yourself. I rebuilt the carb on the Escort RS2000 and it was very satisfying work and not overly difficult either.

    You need carb cleaner, a scraper to remove old gaskets, a Haynes manual, and a decent tool kit.

    You might also want to use a good digital camera to photograph the dismantling. Handy in reassembly should you forget where bits go.

    Jesus man, can you stop posting multiple threads all over the motors forum about this? It's making it difficult to figure out where to reply....

    What carb do you have, and what engine?

    If it's something like a weber/edelbrock 500, have a look at RPI engineering. Let us know what you have and we'll be better equipped to advise.

    Sorry man just thought this place has so much going on I thought I would put it in motors and classic hopefully to get more replies. I didn't realise it was such a busy board.
    Anyway its a edelbrock. Its a 350 Cubic inch. I'm not to sure if the number means the same as the edelbrock 500 you where talking about. Don't know to much about car apart form doing a basic service. Wouldn't mind doing a course for older cars
    Waht else do you need to know so I can find out and get back, thanks

    If its something simple wrong with the carb, get it rebuilt.
    If its a 25 years old carb thats giving hassle my advice would be to throw it away.
    If you dont need it in a big rush I'd buy it from Performance Automotive Warehouse http://www.pawinc.com/

    Or if you need it during the week Rodley Motors in the U.K. www.rodleymotors.co.uk

    From the U.S they are around $250 plus shipping tax etc I'd say you would have it here for around €300.

    Carbs are lovely to do, you take them out and then bring them into the house/garage and get a cup of tea and/or a beer, some biscuits and a good light (ventilation too) its like working with lego and the cleanest job you can do on a classic car. There are loads of guides I googled: carb rebuild edelbrock and found one with colour pictures.

    you can also buy lots of books on the subject, (fingal) library has a book on carbs and I'm sure that they could order you one (think its a one euro charge).

    I would agree, do it yourself, get a book, take your time.

    Before I learned how to rebuild the carb on my 69 cadillac, I took it to macnamaras, they charged me a fortune (like to screw classic car owners) and the car ran WAY worse AFTER it had been with them.

    They told me the carb was fine but I would need some electrical parts. When I eventually opened up the carb myself I found the Main metering rods bent as they had not reassembled the carb right, basically smashed the top down.

    the guys are nice to talk to, but not sure they care about the cars.
    in my opinion - avoid them.

    Thanks for your ideas, but I think I'm just going to buy a new on from the US. I looked at them and there only 315$ new and maybe around 125$ to ship. So it works out around the same price as getting it fixed. Looking forward to putting the new one in.

    I was agreeing with the bit about McNamaras, not telling you to rebuild your own carb! Your plan sounds like a good one to me.
