    Hi all

Thinking of getting a blu ray dvd player for my other half at Christmas.

Are they any good (and if so any particular recommendations if allowed!)?! I have seen movies played on them a couple of times and they look class but I don't know how blu ray is doing overall. Is the availability of blu ray dvds likely to last a while or will they disappear off the market as soon as I buy the player!!

Also can anyone recommend some films that look really good on blu ray?

    Thanks!!:)

Ther film industry is really behind BluRay now that the HD vs. BluRay war is over. Any recent film will look great on BluRay. If you really want to show it off go for a recent action film such as Casino Royale as a demo disk.

There are a lot of entry level players about, and on up to very expensive ones. One of the best BluRay players is believe it or not the PlayStation 3! Which also doubles as a fantastic games console.

Is there a good surround sound system you can get for the PS3 at a reasonable price? I have a surround sound DVD system at the moment, and I am really missing the surround sound when I watch Blu Rays. The picture quality from Blu Rays on a High Def TV is really class.
    Thanks.

Check out richersounds.ie for blu-ray players and surround sound systems.

They have a presence here on boards (under the biz/commercial interaction heading) and offer free delivery to boards.ie members. If you need advice on what kit to buy they are always extremely helpful.

I use this and its absolutely fantastic with the ps3, for games, blurays and normal sky tv. It has an optical input which means you can have digital 5.1 surround which is amazing when playing fps games. Highly recommended

Wow that was a lot of replies in a short space of time. Thanks a million!!

Don't think I'll go with the PS3 though because we already have a Wii at home which he loves but rally doesn't get to play too much cos he's so busy. Free time is spent with dvds really!

Think I've got my hardest Christmas present sorted now - Thanks!

Aslo - love the Batman suggestion. Excellent idea!

Top player. Hold on and there should be some price cuts soon on the Sony players.

Thing about the PS3 is it can be updated as the Blu Ray standard evolves. It can also do other media like photos and videos from a PC. As far as I know its the only Blu Ray player fully up to spec ATM so dont discount it.

Also you can get a media remote for PS3 so its not like the PS2 where you needed to use the PS2 controller.

They you know, actually had a think before releasing it. In fact the PS3 was pretty much designed to be a Bluray player to push Bluray because it was going to be cheaper than the stand alone players because Sony actually make a loss on the PS3 and then make money off licensing for the games so they make the money back in the end.
