My great uncle died on Sunday, and I know many people with a grá for the amateur game knew of him so thought some here may be interested to hear of his passing. His name was Gerard Colman. Fighting as Gearóid O'Colman he won the European Amateur Heavyweight Championship, held in Dublin in 1947. I remember him as a giant although it's strange to note that the heavyweight limit in those days was 81kgs or over. That being said when I last saw him a year or so ago when I shook his hand mine dissappered into his. RIP to a great Irish Sportsman.

    Roper

My Da remembered him, said he was the man to beat for a good few years, presuming it was the same man, reckoned it is the same man, my Da said he was European Champ and he could of been a blacksmith. Da just remembers him as a very big strong boxer.

really sorry to hear that. As you might be able to see from my wikipedia page here that I have been searching (unsuccessfully) to do and article on him for some time but I did do a page on the 1947 European Amateur Boxing Championships

Can you let me know where I can get some more info on him and I will get something done on him.

    RIP.

Yes he was a blacksmith. One of the last, he would have had his business out of where the Bleeding Horse is now. It's nice to know people remember him.

Sligobhoy that's a great page fair play to you. I'll get some more information on him off my Da and send it to you.

Just found this - what is the correct spelling of his name because so far we have about 4.

I'll contact Cormac at irish-boxing.com to get them to sort something.

Gearóid O'Colmain is the Irish version. I spelt it wrong in my original post.

rest in peace big man. European amateur champ is a massive achievement, even more so than pro euro champ. You had to beat the best.

Had heard about him in terms of his European win but never knew much about him. Obviously a great boxer.

While not being a boxing fan, I was lucky enough to meet Gerry. Was gutted to hear that he had passed away.

Mods, is there any way you could delete the last two threads (even though I agree with Roper) bearing in mind the nature of the thread.

You can delete this one as well.

    Last two threads or posts?

I deleted that silly post from HOC!

    Bren

    Yup, I meant 'posts'. Thanks.
