    Hi everyone

I'm interested in doing the online Hibernia course next October, I am currently in final year in NUIM doing music and geog. Just want some people's opinions on the course?

    Thanks,
    Río

    Hi ya
I would like to know if you have any contacts in the primary teaching area before you fork out feesfor Hibernia, ie Principal teachers etc, as you will see from other posters that serious Gaa involement and knowing principal of primary school well is necessary. Ignore me if you wish but in time you'll find out how 'if your face doesn't fit'. Noboby will tell you because schools need plenty 'subs' on standy, I presume you you want permanent work in the future, have you contacts?

I know a couple primary principals and my mum is a secondary teacher so i will have contacts through her as well! I heard a rumour today that Hibernia might close after the February course due to the recession, anyone else heard this?
Where are the lectures held does anyone know?

    Hi 2rio0,
I'm afraid to say I don't think you'll get a place on the course next Oct.
You say you're currently finishing your degree. When will you have your statement of results? As you must have these before you apply.
They are starting to interivew for Oct round about now. Final few places on Feb 09 being filled. (They put extra places on for this Feb intake, otherwise Feb would have been filled long ago)
I repeated my Irish this year & got my results on Aug13th, & that was the day I applied. Feb was almost full by the time I got my interview, that's why I don't think Oct will be available by the time you get interviewed.

The onsites are located depending on where you live. There are several centres around the country & you get assigned to the centre nearest to you. In saying that, my nearest centre is 1.5 hours away.
I'm starting in Feb, so any other questions, just ask.

thanks for the info. I rang up Hibernia and asked them what would the chances be of gettin in next October and she said that some years they do add extra places and that if i state i want the october course i will more than likely get it and that some people who repeated their irish and got results in august got in!

I will be gettin my results mid June! I dont mind the travel either to the lectures. What was the interview like?

    Thanks,
    Río

Hi, there's not a chance of that beig true, I'm sorry!!!
I repeated the LC this year. Results 13th. Applied 13th. didn't get my interview until the 5th November, 2-3 weeks after the Oct course started.
Lots I know who also repeated didn't get their interview until the week after me, so I was one of the 1st to get called for interview from the repeat LC gang.

The people who repeated their LC in '07 not only didn't make it in time for the Oct '07 course, they also didn't make it in time for the Feb '08 course, & only started there in Oct '08.

I only manged to get onto the Feb '09 course because extra places were put on.

But, maybe the fact that you'll have your results in June, & provided they do put on extra places in Oct, you might just manage to get one of the last few places.

The interview was ok. Nothing overly tricky in it, but when they just switch from English to Irish you mind tends to go blank. So long as you quickly recover from this it's grand. It's impossible to know how you did when you walk out of the interview though because they're SO nice & it's just so hard to know what they're looking for.
You definitely need to be well prepared for it.
There's a great website www.educationposts.ie where you can ask all these sorts of q's. Great for info.
    All the best with it.

Boozy babe, I'm hoping to go back and repeat the leaving cert honours myself. I did pass Irish in 2001 and havnt spoken a word of it since but am desperate to get into the Hibernia course. Im wondering how hard was it to go back and study for the honours leaving cert- I will literally be starting from scratch so im wondering whether I should apply to do the Leaving in 2011 and give myself two years and get my Irish up to scratch or is it doable in one year- I have a young child to look after too!!
Also any information on the questions asked in Irish for the interview would be great,
    thanks a mill

If starting from scratch, you'll have quite a bit of work to do on Irish. The standard expected now is much lower though.

Would you think of going to the Gaeltacht for a start and maybe getting some Irish tapes to listen to?

I'm going to get Turas Teanga and start from there and work through that myself this year and then next year maybe do a course before I sit the Leaving, im going to take my time so im fully prepared for the exam and then eventually (hopefully) the hibernia interview! I'd be afraid to go into a class or start a course now in Irish as I probably wouldnt be able to keep up and i'd be lost and end up quiting!!
