    the new network manager found the modem straight away have tinkered a round with the settings but no luck some times it will "connect " but only 3 or 4 Kb are transferred

    Is that the right DNS address for O2? It looks a bit odd? Can you try Open DNS?

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

    Your ISP may not allow it though.

    Also, try unticking authentication.

    Have a look in Routes as well. There might be something there like "default route"

    "Could not determine remote IP address" seem to be the problem :confused:

    Hi, I went into Network Configuration and chose Mobile Broadband, then selected O2 and country Ireland.

    I noticed this (see attached).

    Try configuring it that way. Also, re-tick the Authentication if you had unticked it, that was just an experiment.

    You could also try to put the Open DNS nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf:
    sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf

    and add:
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220

    It might just ignore it and use the ISP ones though.

    Hope this helps.

    Interesting. I used to have an E220 but i'm not familiar with E270.

    Something you could try is Gnome-PPP , you should find it in Synaptic or get it from the terminal:
    sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp

    Once you install it, plug in the E270 and reboot. Then type in a terminal
    sudo wvdialconf

    Then manually input your settings in Gnome-PPP. Worth a try. You can see the connection log to see what it's doing as well.

    tried Gnome-PPP but no luck output file
    --> Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!"

    --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
    --> Cannot get information for serial port.

    --> Initializing modem.
    --> Sending: ATX3
    ATX3
    OK

    --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    OK

    --> Modem initialized.
    --> Sending: ATM1L3DT*99#
    --> Waiting for carrier.
    ATM1L3DT*99#
    CONNECT 7200000

    --> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
    --> Unable to run /usr/sbin/pppd.

    --> Check permissions, or specify a "PPPD Path" option in wvdial.conf.

    :confused::confused::confused:

    That seems to be about File Permissions within Linux. You as a user don't seem to have the permission to access /usr/sbin/pppd.

    Check in System/Administration/Users and Groups that you are allowed to access the internet using a modem (see attached).

    If that doesn't work, try the solution in this thread:

    the only way i was able to get online was re install 8.04.1 and install
    Vodafone Mobile Connect Card

    and enter the dns default servers 62.40.32.33,62.40.32.34

    wvdial and gnome PPP would always default to DNS 10.11.12.14 :(

    managed to get the e270 working it seems you have to have the PIN verification ON to get it to connect :rolleyes:

    now the only problem is it only stays connected for 5 to 20 mins :confused:

    I ran into a lot of problems setting up my huawei E270 also, when I upgraded to the latest version of NetworkManager, there was a vast improvement.
