I quit smoking nearly 7 weeks ago and have been doing great. However on friday gone i got some really bad news and the first thing i did is buy smokes. I only smoked 2 and said thats it, i wouldn't smoke anymore. However on saturday the box of cigarettes where still there so i had 2 again on saturday. I haven't smoked since but i feel like i'm back at week 1 cos i can't stop thinking about having a smoke (though i'm not craving them really). I was doing so well, i went from a 25 a day habit to nothing and i really felt like my head was in the right palce, i was thinking bout smoking less and less, some days hardly at all.

Has anyone else had a temporary set back and what did they need to do to get there head back around it?

I did get some really ****ty news on friday but life is always ****ty so i need to be able to resist. Any advice appreciated!!

Evil P all you can do is start again! And stop beating yourself up about it..
I don't know how I'd react to bad news! Throw away the remaining smokes or give them to someone. They'll keep tempting you if they're sitting nearby.. Also concentrate on trying to feel the way you were before the bad news.. presumably chuffed with yourself..
    Hope all works out.

Throw away the smokes and start from there. Unfortunately even one smoke puts you back on the path to addiction but you haven't undone all your good work... Most people who quit have gone through failed attempts... It's just a case of learning from them. For me personally a major motivation for not having one is that I'd have to go through all the hassle of giving up again - so not one drag....

Hi Evil, before i say anything, well done for deciding to give up, i gave up 6 years ago after 15 years and i've never felt better or looked back. If you really want to quit read the easyway to give up smoking by alan carr - the short, 140 odd page version. Myself and 4 friends in the past 6 years have given up after reading this and i worked in a jail where prisoners gave up after reading this! It only works if you really want to give up which sounds like you and is quite straightforward but there are rules. Just so you know, the 'sneaky smoke' like you had is not allowed. First time i read it, i was off for a couple of months, like you i had some news had a smoke and within a week i was back to square one. I reread the book followed all the rules and am still off them. Best thing i ever read so that's my advice.
    Best of luck, James
