    there are loads of numbers on the box, not sure which is the serial number

    Serial number is on the back of the PS not the box.

    actually wanted to post it on an ebay listing to prove to ebay that it's not a counterfeit one (they're watching listings like hawks at this time of year)

    You may need it to give to sony if you are reporting a broken console, they will know if its in warranty then.
