Worth repairing an expensive micro hi-fi?

    Hi

I bought a Sony micro Hi-Fi 5 or 6 years back for almost £600 (yes pounds!!) and it's a fantastic little unit which up until recently has given effortless performance and incredible sound quality.

Lately the left channel of the amp has started failing and all sources would play only through the right channel.

That stopped briefly and both channels would work for a while and then after a loud click both channels would die completely.

This happens on all sources (tuner, CD, Minidisc, Aux..) and is the same story whether using the speakers or headphones.

Looks like the amp is knackered. The question now is whether to even attempt to get it repaired. Richer sounds has an almost identical spec little micro-receiver from Teac that would make a great like for like replacement- and it would cost approx €190 with delivery.

What should I do? repair or replace?

Can't seem to find anyone in the golden pages any more that fixes Hi-Fi in south Dublin.

    Cheers.

I think it unlikely that you could get it repaired economically, unless it has some sentimental/otherwise value - if so you could try contacting Alliance Electric in Georges St - they may have access/know of a repair centre who would give you an idea as to cost.

Odds are that you'd probably be better off looking for a replacement.

    Thanks for an honest appraisal

I used to bring old broken stereo bits to a lad over in Booterstown and he was great at fixing them but that was around 10 years ago and he charged 75 quid back then so it's likely as you say that it would be more cost effective to replace it than waste time and money trying to find a repair.

Plus he's not there anymore and I can't for love nor money find anyone on the south side of Dublin who fixes stereos and such like any more.

Ah well - off to the attic with it and on to the Richer Sounds website

    Cheers

I know of a repair guy based in Ballyogan. I got his number from Cloney Audio but my proposed repair was "uneconomical". If of interest, PM me and I will PM you his number. Spin
