(Not sure if this is classified as a medical question and therefore against the board rules)
Sorry if this grosses anyone out

I have a recurring hemorrhoid, usual symptoms-I went to the doc before and a change in diet sorted it out unfortunately I (stupidly) didnt stick to the diet and its come back.

Anyway I went to the toilet the other day and it was so brutally painful that I couldnt sleep that night- with that it mind Ive been havent been able to go since (3 days) and have become constipated. Im back on the high fibre/fluid diet but obviously that takes a while to kick in. In the short term to get me over this constipation I was thinking of having a colonic irrigation but Ive seen some sites say its ok for constipation relief while having a hemorrhoid and some say to wait til the hemorrhoid is gone.

Is it just a comfort thing? ie a colonic with a hemorrhoid is uncomfortable but not unhealthy or should it be avoided until the hemorrhoid is gone for serious health reasons?

(If its just a comfort thing then I might do it as I cant imagine it being any more uncomfortable then trying to pass it after it sitting there for 3 days)

Colonic irrigation sounds like a fairly invasive procedure for something like haemorrhoids! I'd imagine the effects are fairly short term.

People are often prescribed laxatives as well as fibre supplements (like Fybogel) which often prove beneficial, eg Lactulose, Movicol, Senna. The idea behind the laxatives is that there's less straining because the stool is looser, so shouldn't trouble you as much when passing a motion.

Please don't take the above as medical advice however, your symptoms should be assessed in person by a doctor who has examined you and who is aware of the extent of the problem. Only then can a proper decision be with regard to treatment.

go and have a chat with your doctor.

Colonic irrigation is complete quackery with no scientific basis. It can do much more harm than good.
