    Hi,

I am starting running this week and was looking for any advice at all from you guys.

Do any of you live in a rural area? Its dark when I get home from work so do you just throw on the hi-viz gear and head out into the darkness? or would you drive to a nearby town where there are street lights?

Also, I have quite a bit of excess weight, can any females give me any suggestions on a good pair of running shoes that will lessen the damage on my joints?

    Thanks in advance.

    D

I'd advise you to head to Amphibian King in Bray to find a suitable pair of running shoes. As to where to run, it's entirely up to you, you can get some hi-vis gear and flashing lights(similar to bike lights) to wear round your arms and head torches are available too. Just make sure you run against traffic and be careful at corners etc..

Going to second the suggestion of getting properly fitted at a running specialist shop - they can give you the best advice on what you should be wearing. I'm also a female carrying some extra weight (though I've lost 2 stone since I started running :D) - but what works for me won't necessarily work for you.

It might be worth trying to stay off the roads as much as possible. If there's somewhere with a decent grass or trail surface it might be a lot easier on your legs than the road (as well as no chance of getting hit by a car). In winter it can be difficult to avoid the roads coz of the short daylight hours but if you are with a club they might have somewhere good with lights where you can train. I used to live in the countryside up until recently and I'd go out on the roads in the dark sometimes but it isn't ideal - drivers probably aren't expecting to meet a runner on those roads.
