    Hi

I want to take up a martial art, firstly to improve my now woeful fitness but also to help me get out of trouble if i'm ever attacked in town or whatnot.

I tried jujitsu for a few months (this was ages ago) but my flexibility was poor and (immature, i know) there was just a little too much grinding of crotches going on. I was told by many people that 'jits (or similar) was the best for dealing with other MA styles as it neutralises a lot of stuff as everything is brought to ground. But no scumbag in town is going to try and roundhouse kick me in the head. In my experience the vast majority of fights/scraps i've seen in public were won by the person who a) connected with the first decent punch to the face or b) the person who connected with the first bottle to the head.

If i do get a attacked, i have no interest in getting involved in grappling or submission holds (giving his scumbag chums ample time to give me a good kicking/stabbing) nor do I have any interest in meeting out my own brand of justice by teaching the scumbags a 'lesson'. All i want is to have the ability to buy myself enough time to run away and get out of the situation as quickly as possible.

I'm a bit confused as to what I should be aiming for. Should I just continue my jogging for fitness and take some kind of self defense class? I'm short enough at 5'8 so I'd like to learn how to compensate for lack of height without resorting to going to ground. I guess I'd like to learn how to throw an effective punch, how to block a punch/kick/headbutt and maybe some standing holds, i dunno.

I'm not interested in being a hero or competing or any of that, i'd just like to know that if i do get started on (and i cant talk my way out of it:P) i can buy myself and my gf enough time to leg it. I'm in the dun laoghaire area so if anyone wants to recommend classes/clubs, that general region or the city centre would be fine. Any other general advice or comments also welcome.

    Thanks:D

    Hi

I teach a Lameco Eskrima class in city center every sat morning. Its primary aim is realistic training in empty hands, Knife defence and Stick defence. The whole ideal with the system is to hit hard and get out of there. The art is not based on pure strength, but on developing good body mechanics, so this might help you with your worries. If something like this interest you, you can check our blog or send me a pm and I answer any questions you may have. Best of Luck with your search.

boxing, full contact kickboxing or muay thai.

all of the above martial arts are concerned with dealing with strikes and dishing them out is the most efficient manner. i believe that combat sports provide the best environment for some of the skills used in self-defence.

otherwise go with a "self-defence" course like those Jon teach.
