Comics in Film & Television

I wanted to post about Dave Roman's graphic novel Agnus Quill being picked up by Paramount but I wasn't sure if it was of enough interest to the general people who post on the forum to warrant a whole thread so I was thinking maybe we could have a thread for comics and movie/television news? You know for smaller stories of comics being developed into other forums. Obviously big projects like Watchman would have threads just for them but smaller projects and rumors etc. Like there's been some news about the writer for spiderman 4, the film is years away so not worth a whole thread. What do people think?

I reckon this would be a good idea, it would be nice to have somewhere to stick comments and news about TV/Film projects. I will sort something out during the day.

Aaaaaaaaand now that my brain is working, thread has been stuckified. Please bear in mind that this thread is for any and all discussion pertaining to film or television adaptations of comics, be they rumoured, in production, or already released.

If you want to start a new thread for a particular topic, feel free to do so though threads that don't warrant enough interest will probably be merged with this one.

A couple of things to bear in mind:
    • If you're posting about a news story, please include a link to your source (doesn't have to be an "official" site or anything) and express an opinion on the story itself. I'd like to avoid too many non-stories, so try to avoid rumours. Likewise, blatant self-promotion without an actual news angle isn't something I want to see much of (people talking about adaptations they are involved with is fine, people mouthing off about how they would adapt properties were they to be involved is not, for example).
    • There may be a better forum for the news item you want to post than Comics - news about Heroes, for example, would be better off in the Heroes forum.
To start off the discussion, CBR's Comic Reel mentions that there's a Tintin adaptation series being discussed by Sony and Paramount as a joint-financed venture, with Spielberg and Jackson involved. While I wasn't at all impressed with King Kong and Spielberg's glory days appear to be some way behind him, I'd be very interested to see how they handle this given the nature and age of the material. I can't shake the fear that they'll cast that numpty Shia LeBouf as Tintin though...

(There's also a small story about the decision to replace Terence Howard as James Rhodes for Iron Man 2 in that link, but since it's essentially rumours on the subject rather than a proper studio statement I'd take it with a pinch of salt)

I've merged the sticky with the "Preacher has a director" thread; the quoted comments below are from that thread but the original posts were removed to keep the sticky consistent:

Preacher has a director....and it's Sam Mendes, a weird choice for a comic book film but it could work, maybe they think becuase he's English he can do a Christopher Nolan on it. So what the reckon and who'll be in the cast? I reckon James Franco is probably on the shortlist of leads and maybe he'll get Kevin Spacey to play the Saint of Killers going through a mid-life crisis of some sort.

    Story here

View Askew were meant to be making Preacher for the longest time with James Marsden as Jesse, I still think he's a good choice for the role.

    Argh, not Cyclops as Jessie!

I reckon you'd want unknowns, tbh. Unless they deviate from the comic's visuals, it's going to be hard to match Jessie's appearance with a big-name actor, so it might be easier not to bother.

What about Cassidy? I suspect an unknown would be better too, but some voice in my brain keeps shouting "James Nesbitt", which would be funny if nothing else :D

    Jade Goody as Arseface?

Heh, that set me up to start off the day with a smile on my face :D

I did see a couple of interesting casting suggestions on Whitechapel for the Preacher film, but I reckon you'd want unknowns for it to really work. I can just see some producer type casting Denis Leary as Cassidy, for example, and you can imagine about how well that would go....:(

The worst thing about it is that there are probably plenty of worse choices out there. Plus, if Jesse is a big Bill Hicks fan and
he and Cassidy have a big falling out at the peak of the story
it would be a nice snarky joke to have Cassidy played by that guy whose comedy career was based on copying Bill Hicks.

Of course, now I'm stuck with the mental image of Cassidy as he appears in the comic singing Leary's Traditional Irish Folk Song...

But is it going to go ahead? As much as I would love to see the movie (and trust me, I'd be happy never to watch another movie ever again if this was out), I still don't think it'll happen because of who the main character's enemy is.And I don't mean Herr Starr.
But I do hope it will eventually come out, preferably as a series because there's way too much to put into a movie and even if sequels were planned to fill in the gaps, the first movie could bomb and halt the whole thing.
And a few of my dream cast would be:
    Herr Starr-John Malkovich
    Jody-Nick Nolte
    T.C-probably Steve Buscemi
Saint of Killers-Mark Callaway (Undertaker, think about it;))
And if Hugh Jackman was younger, him for Jesse.

Brittany Murphy as Tulip? Always thought Tulip was a bit skanky.

I have to say I'm not looking forward to Millers film adaption of the Spirit as I think I can save myself the ticket price and just re watch Sin City.....heres an interesting piece on the Spirit move that could have been.

Yeah, every time I see anything about Miller's Spirit adaptation I wonder how on earth he can believe that him forcing the Sin City template onto it actually does the material any favours. I think this summarizes it quite nicely :D (On another note, it's weird to compare the Rob Liefeld panel in that comic to this poster for the movie...)

Oh gawd, if that's about Pixar's now-abandoned plans for The Spirit, then I don't want to read about it again.
It should've been done, I still can't believe Miller got it, what an ass.
I read in a magazine, someone wrote The Spirit as being the sequel to Sin City. Whether that person meant literally or not, it bloody might as well be...

(EDIT) forgot to mention, the first trailer for the Watchmen game has been released online (titled Watchmen : The End Is Nigh).
If that is news to you, well basically its a downloadable episodic game where you play as Nightowl and Rorschach, and its a prelude to the comic. Go figure.

It wouldn't have been Pixar as Pixar as a company didn't exist at this point but it was pushed forward by John Lasseter who would later go on to found Pixar after being fired from Disney [and is now ironically heading up the animation department at Disney] and by Brad Bird who has worked with Pixar and at the time worked for Disney but it was never in development as a Pixar film.

    A couple of interesting updates:

Watchmen legal brouhaha now resolved: BBC Article || CBR Article

Heroes cribbing even further from comics, rebooting for next series? BBC article (OK, not strictly comics news but given how many things they've half-inched straight from X-men I figured people might be interested).

Something for people to get excited about - Brett Ratner to direct a Youngblood movie - not sure how they are going to cast it, gotta be hard to find deformed people who look like Liefeld's drawings.

Wow, when I saw your post I wasn't particularly hopeful but that looks really cool, it seems to have captured the spirit of the comic perfectly.

As for the Youngblood movie...I've managed to get this far into my life without more than a passing glance at the comics (yes, I'm even ignoring the stuff Alan Moore wrote for it) and I'm not going to change that for a Brett f***ing Rattner movie.

Interestingly, according to Comicbook Resources there's a Green Lantern animated movie scheduled to hit sometime this summer. Wonder whether that means the rumoured live-action series has been canned?

there's also a Wonder Woman animated film coming as well so guess that live action film isn't getting off the ground either.

The IFCO has dropped Watchmen's age rating from an 18's to 16's permanently, thanks to Paramount Pictures appealing for a reconsideration.
Great news for seventeen year olds such as myself. :pac:

just got back from seeing it and I don't know how they talked them into dropping the cert, there is some pretty graphic sex scenes that are one step short of porn. I certainly don't shock easy or have any issues with porn [not with my giant stack of yaoi] but have to admit even I was going "thats a bit much" at one scene.

Agreed on that, Ztoical, I know exactly the scene you mean. Did you notice the "reduced on appeal" disclaimer under the 16 cert? That's the first time that's happened apparently -- John Kellegher making a point.
